Despite their different backgrounds, Lena and Martin risk having a relationship in spite of opposition from Lena’s only daughter and from an undocumented Mexican teenager who claims she has been forced into sex slavery. Martin’s effort to rescue the attractive young girl from slavery risks endangering his relationship with the woman who may give him a second chance at real love. And Lena’s good deed to help the girl jeopardize her relationships with Martin and with the small community that is her home.

Won in a giveaway, I really wanted to enjoy this book. It had an interesting objective; it was "the story of Martin and Lena and their struggle to hang on to each other in the face of hatred, danger and clashing backgrounds". Martin is traveling from New York to California to start a new life. He has lost his job to bad choices, his wife divorced him because of adultery and his mother recently died. I need to let you know at this point that he is a Vietnam vet so I figured his age is at least in his latter 50's.

Beset by bad luck he wonders, why him? The problem is he doesn't see what is wrong with himself. He is highly judgmental of others. In the first chapter alone he comments on women's love handles and compares other women as looking like dairy cows. Based on the description at the back of the book I assumed this was going to be a contemporary romance with some suspense. Unfortunately, I already didn't care for the main character but I continued to read. I hoped for better things to come.

Martin meets Lena at a restaurant where she works. A Christian theme is introduced but it is confusing at best. Lena was married before. Her husband cheated on her. It has been fifteen years and she hasn't had a serious relationship. Martin enters her life and in a matter of days she is having sex with him. She thinks she loves him. Sorry, I just couldn't relate to Lena's character. What should have been a woman with common sense and high ideals, she came across as wishy-washy and clingy. Even her adult daughter who met Martin briefly had a better handle on his character.

There is a secondary story of a 17 year old girl and human slavery. Martin becomes involved. He has his weak moments and has sex with her. Hmmm, the term pedophile comes to mind. He knows she is underage but he still succumbs to his needs. What is wilder yet is Lena still wants him! Yuck!

I believe THE FATE TWISTER is a self-published book. I have no problem with this normally but there were too many run-on sentences. I thought the content was very descriptive at first but the connotations soon became old. Everything that happened didn't need to have an explicit meaning. Lastly, the ending to the story was not completely clear. I honestly want others to read this story and write a review of the book. I hate to give it one star but I couldn't find anything about this contemporary romance that I enjoyed. Sorry, Mr. Pierson!

I won this book in a giveaway, but unfortunately I didn't get to read it. I lost my home in the Bastrop County complex fires, and my collection of over 300 books was destroyed, along with everything else. Will look for it again, though.

I won this via goodreads first reads but it was sent as a pdf - unfortunately my hard drive crashes - along with my copy . I was about halfway through what was proving to be an enjoyable - beautifully described book when this occured

I won this book on Goodreads Firstreads. I enjoyed this book, it did not have the ending I had hoped for but I enjoyed the ending. Easy read.
