This collection of black and white photography, much of it previously unpublished, features the work of the master photographer, Ernst Haas. The photographs are from his travels to America, Asia, the South Pacific and Europe. By the author of The Creation and Colour Photography.
"Each man on earth is nothing but a mosaic of a picture he will never see." - Ernst Haas
I know I've been giving a lot of four-star and five-star ratings lately, by these black and white photographs by Ernst Haas are absolutely brilliant. I don't think I've seen a collection of b&w photographs that are so consistently striking in composition and execution, with the possible exception of Algimantas Kezys's body of work and Josef Koudelka’s masterful photographs
All black and white Haas, much of which is/was relatively unknown. Uncannily timed street photography, which despite the sometimes poor rendition, still impresses.
Some of the landscapes are breathtaking - a long sedan cruising (or stuck in snow?) in an all white mountain range.
There are some odd portraits of celebrities: the subjects seem distant and disengaged, yet at least they are not posing.
The book ends with some truly strange abstract pieces, some biological, some geometric, some unsettling.
An inspiration for anyone dabbling in black and white or street photography.
