Maude Gonne MacBride is best known as the lifelong muse of William Butler Yeats. This work breathes life into the woman who wouldn't stay on her pedestal. It is a fascinating study of a woman with a flair for the dramatic, whose personality and will carried her through the creation of the Republic of Ireland, through personal loss and national tragedy. This book blends scholarship with a narrative that ensures admiration for a woman who stayed true to herself throughout her life.

An interesting biography of an activist who charged into causes wholeheartedly and effectively but the writing meandered around, sometimes circling back to the same event, without adding anything to the story. I had a hard time staying interested which is too bad because her personal life was quite shocking for the day!
