Maya's summer is shaping up to be unforgettable—in both good and bad ways. First she's sent to stay with her grandmother for a month. Living in the city, Maya is too far from her friend Keysha and her boyfriend, Misalo—and too near her rebellious cousin Viviana. When Maya finally comes home, her parents drop a bombshell—Viviana is moving in with them.

Her cousin has barely unpacked before she's creating chaos. Truth is, Maya kind of likes the way life is a whole lot less predictable with Viviana around. But her motives are up for debate—especially when it comes to Misalo. And as Maya's little sister, Anna, grows more fascinated with her cool older cousin, Maya begins to see that following where Viviana leads has its price. And it could cost Maya her reputation, her relationship…and maybe even her future….

Maya's Choice
Maya's Choice briefly is a book that's divided into the stories of two girl's cousin's Maya and Vivica. Maya story goes she's in love with her boyfriend Misalo but her parent's think that because of a previous incident that wound her with a broken leg Misalo isn't the guy she thinks he is. Of course, she's a teenager and swears up and down they're going to be together and winds up being rebellious and having to go live with her grandmother. While Vivica is living with her mother who bounces from abusive man to abusive man gets turned on to a life of pickpocketing from Toya Keysha's old rival.

* Now firstly I knew that Misalo was *not* going to delete those pictures. I found myself thinking if I were in that situation with someone that supposedly loved me and was feeling pressure to do something in my gut I wasn't comfortable with would I do it. I was Maya's age once and I can see where she would have did what she did. We all do stupid things when we're young. But I think the lesson her mother and grandmother was trying to teach her was a good one. People that love you (really love you) wouldn't pressure you to do something that you were uncomfortable with like taking naked pictures.
*I also know that guys young (and older) will try you. But you have to be strong enough to stand up for your beliefs.
*At first I thought they were being a little unreasonable. Just because Maya got hurt at a party when she was with Misalo because he wanted to stay and see a dogfight didn't necessarily cause what happened to her to happen. Was it a bad sign that the guy had a violent side (wanting to watch dogs rip into each other)? At first, I thought hmm it's weird but... but as it turned out, in the end, yes it was a bad thing (because of the way he ripped on Maya at the pool) Point for Maya's parents for calling that early.
*Even tho Maya's choices probably weren't the best I think she made the choices any teenager *would* make. She was infatuated with one guy that led her to do something sexual and she lusted over another that made her act with her hormones. Yes, when I was her age this brings back memories and the results were the exact same as the end results with Misalo.
*Who I didn't like in this was her sister? Ok, I've never had a little sister? Are they always this devious and malicious? Maya's choices I could relate to but Anna's. NO!
*Now Vivica's choices. Vivica was dealt a hard hand in this from the beginning. Her father (although he could do no wrong in her eyes) the book made out to look like a hustler He was definitely not a good role model. Her mother was a crap example also Look at the men her mother choose alone. UH YEAH. What either way can you turn when the only time your mother pays you any attention is in-between men, and showing you that it's okay for a man to abuse you physically, emotionally, and mentally? It's no wonder she turned to Toya and making fast money. The only positive person in her life was the grandmother.
* I really wanted Maya to be a positive example for Vivica and show her what she *could* be. Not that, of course, Maya was perfect but when you look at Maya's parents and you consider what Vivica can't seem to get you sympathize just a tiny bit at how it must look from the Vivica's mother's perspective. Here is the older sister, wonderful marriage, college degree. I don't think the grandmother loved her any less, but try having that weight on you. I've been there and it's not a good feeling AT ALL. Let me tell you.
* But that's not taking up for Vivica because what she has against her cousin is childish and unreasonable. She's mad at her for something that happened when they were kids. Honey LET IT GO! How can you hang on to a grudge that's lasted you that many years?

Overall the lesson on Maya's end seems to be about judging people prematurely. Yes, Misalo didn't leak Maya's picture BUT he didn't erase it either. I've grown enough to know that the people you think you're so in love with guess what might not be there for you tomorrow so you always have to keep it in the back of your mind. I would say reserve pictures like that for a marriage, but even then and in this day and time you can never tell. I rate Maya's choice a 6. It gave a good message about thinking about the choices we make as illustrated by Maya and Vivica

Maya's choice is an amazing book that relates to many people in various situations. The author Earl Sewell is very good at writing books and I enjoy all of them. His creativity and knowledge of problems teen face today is astonishing. Now days we teens and young adults face situation were we act childish and don't respond to things in the appropriate manner, Earl Sewell points out some of those flaws we have and brings them to life with his characters.
Maya's choice is one of the few books that I have read and been so intrigued by it that I can't wait to read the next one. The anticipation and thirst to know what is going to happen next is just so exciting and thrilling to think about. In the book one would think that since the book is called Maya's choice it would be only about her and she would be your favorite character, well for me it is the total opposite. The book is based on a two sided story with Maya and her cousin Vivana, frankly I find Viviana more appealing than Maya. Not just because of her hard living situation but because she knows how to stand up for herself and doesn't depend on others, shes not sappy like Maya and knows where she is headed in life (even though that is not very far).

I liked this book a lot.I liked this book because it was very meaningful. For example on page 116 and 117 when Viviana's mother and her boyfriend Martin was having a fight and Martin started to shake her Viviana got a knife and hid it and was protecting her mom.People who would like this book are people who enjoy reading reading meaningful books. They would really like this book if one of your parents ever abandoned you or died. They would also like this book if they enjoy reading about how characters have problems and solve them in a good way or a bad way.One challenge about this book was understanding why the characters would do things the way they did.For example how Anna agreed to take the drugs from Carlo's cousin or how Viviana decided to get back at Maya for putting the drugs in her bag when she didn't even know if Maya put them in there.

I think Maya's Choice was a really good book. To me this book teaches you about growing up, doing things you dont have buisness of, and respect your family. This book is always about showing respect for your family. Also this book is about these two girls, different worlds, and how they think their life is the WORST. These two girls' names is Maya and Viviana. Maya is a 16 year old girl with an annoying lil sister, her boyfriend(who she thinks is the "one"), her best friend Keysha, and her oh so messed up cousin Viviana. Vivana on the other hand, is a 15 year old girl with her complicated mom, her mom's dummy of a boyfriend, her best friend Toya, and last but not least, her oh so perfect, princess-y cousin Maya. These girls' lives are messed up both seperatley and together.

This book was awesome!!! No offense the 1st 3 chapters were very boring. But after a while it gets better. It gets so juicy (if you know what I mean) in the ending, I'm not going to lie but I was literally screaming while reading chapters 10 through 18. Earl Sewell is a great writer!! I'm crying right now because I'm dying to know what's next in the following book Back To Me. However I'm not sure if my local library has it in stock and I don't feel like paying $19.99 on a book I'm probably going to through away after I'm done reading it. But anyway I just wanted to tell you I hate the 2nd main character Viviana, she's wicked. After reading Maya's series I'm probably going to read Keysha's .
I Love It !!!!

I read this awhile ago and it was really good. I loved keysha's books too and loved those. So now that he has started a new series on her best friend I find that cool. Also I think that if he's looking for new book ideas he could start a new book series on either viviana or Anna. :)
