Implosion narrates the earlier life of Seymour Filchmour, an immoral banker found in Thomas’ novel Presage. Filchmour, his family fortune grown to a level incomprehensible to residents of the Piedmont, exercises his political and financial muscle over the small fiefdoms of the region. Reeling from his ruthless business dealings, Filchmour's broken and bitter enemies vow vengeance. In an election day TV interview, Filchmour displays his deep seated bigotry and arrogance to a regional TV audience. On the same morning, his bank is cased for a burglary by two Vietnam army buddies who have fallen on hard times. As Filchmour’s well-laid plans and ordered life start to unravel he is subpoenaed by the House Banking Committee, his wife files for divorce, and an ex-employee initiates a class action law suit. The plot thickens as halfway around the world a Jordanian citizen, who years earlier suffered an insult at the hands of Filchmour, hatches a plan to financially destroy Filchmour and carry out his sworn revenge. As these separate forces work toward the destruction of his empire, Filchmour grabs the bait of the Middle Eastern scheme.
