Experts in such fields as library science, reading theory, and children's literature discuss such topics as the needs of gifted students and reluctant readers, and the benefits of reading aloud
As a fifth grade teacher, this was a good resource to look at for organizing and encouraging reading with older students. The section that I was most interested in was about book discussions (169-175). This part discusses the different kinds of book discussions that occur in different situations, including literature circles. No matter what the place or reason, the author stresses the issue of trust…something that MUST be established in the classroom for meaningful, successful discussions to happen. Another crucial point is that students’ ideas and choices are valued, which in turn motivates them to read and discuss. A really neat idea included is ending discussions with an unanswered question or thought to encourage and inspire students to go back and re-read the book in the future.
