If you are expecting a read that is full of anger, and blame and depression, then you will be disappointed. This book is an outline of the life of one survivor of this virus, and the legacy that remains after survival. It is hoped that it will encourage others with this, or other afflictions to see that there is always a life to be led. It may be far from the life you may have wished for, or indeed the life you might choose, but it is still a life, and hopefully with a sense of humour that shines through. This story has not reached its conclusion as yet, as there may well be hurdles to jump in the future, but for now this is the living history. This account is written in the victim's own words, as he lived it and as he viewed his life. It is a personal account....'On the first day the nurse asked "any pain?" to which I replied politely "no thank you".I really was not intending to make her laugh, I was half conscious I think at the time, and was just answering the question as I had heard it ..'
Please read this book, you won't regret it. This is a warm story told from the heart.
Rather than a book read alone, I felt as if I was in a room with the author and he was telling me his story. Just as we do in conversation, or perhaps more especially when one is listening to someone tell their own story, it's not always perfect; but that authenticity for me, is part of its overall charm. I couldn't put it down, I took it to bed with me one night, and woke up early the following morning to finish it. I have one complaint ..... It's too short! :) That's no problem though; I'm going to read it again. :)
I'm not sure what I expected before reading this story. I thought that it may have been one full of medical terminology describing how the author lived with polio. I found it was a tremendously inspiring story that draws you in as you witness the ups and downs in the author's life and how he coped with and survived everything thrown his way. I love stories that remind us all that we can do anything and this one surely does.
A short read, more like a conversation with a friend who is just telling you his experience with living with a devastating disease. It just flows and takes the reader right along with it. His adventures, full faced joy in what life dealt him is inspiring. If it weren't for the occasional near death situations he would mention, one would never know he had an illness. Definitely not a pity party in this book. Very entertaining and highly recommended.
I found this book really interesting. Author is a real survivor managing life with polio. It is an excellent motivation for young readers. I felt like having a real conversation with the Author
