Celeste loved being a witch in every season, from working in her garden in spring to tending The Witch's Emporium in summer. In autumn she loved to celebrate Halloween, along with all of the other witches, and in winter she loved Christmas. Here she was quite unique, as all of the other witches flew south for the season. One cold winter, at the suggestion of her cat Gertrude, Celeste set out to work for Santa, only to be rebuffed at first by one of his elves. But when Santa was distressed by the length of the "Naughty List" from nearby Ciderville, Celeste had the perfect solution, proving that she was indeed a Christmas Witch...

I discovered The Christmas Witch quite by accident, while looking for a different seasonal title, and am quite happy I did. I love Christmas picture books, and have a great interest in witchy ones as well, so this seemed like the perfect fit. The story is from American author Michelle Guerrero, and the artwork from Italian illustrator Laura Proietti. While I found the narrative here sweet, and appreciated the message about kindness, the latter half of the story felt a little forced. The attention veers away from Celeste and Santa, and focuses on the children of Cinderville, who felt a little too easily reformed. That being said, it was still an enjoyable read, and my pleasure was greatly enhanced by Proietti's delightful artwork. She also illustrated Spanish author Susanna Isern's witchy chapter-book series, Malvarina , so she was a good choice for this title. I loved her vivid use of color, and her cute-as-a-button characters, and felt overall that the visuals here helped along the text. Recommended to little witches who love Christmas, and to picture book readers looking for sweet holiday stories about being generous and kind.
