About the author

Françoise Bourdin was born listening to opera. Her parents, both opera singers, helped her to develop an appreciation for strong characters and destinies, and for the music of words. As a teenager, she discovered horseback riding and it became her exclusive hobby. She dedicated her teens to this passion and to reading the works of classical authors that she discovered in her father’s huge library. Bourdin started to write short stories when she was very young. Her first novel was published by Editions Julliard when she was only twenty. Writing became the most important thing in her life and her second novel, two years later, was adapted for TV.

Her fiction describes family stories, secrets, and passions. She values brave characters who face life boldly and never give up when confronted with adversity. Since 1994, she has written thirty books, three of which have been adapted for television. Her readership continues to grow with each novel.

Bourdin has two daughters and lives in a beautiful home in Normandy. She writes every day, always with the same pleasure, the most beautifully human and moving stories. She knows how to express our deepest emotions and to write stories that resemble our own lives.

Elle est mariée à un médecin et a deux filles, Fabienne, née 1981, et Frédérique, née 1982.

Elle commence à écrire des nouvelles à 16 ans. Elle publie son premier roman en 1972, Les Soleils mouillés. En 1973, son second roman, De vagues herbes hautes est choisi par Josée Dayan pour réaliser son premier téléfilm — avec comme interprète Laurent Terzieff. Depuis, elle a publié près d'une trentaine de livres.
Elle est aussi scénariste de profession pour la télévision, beaucoup de ses romans ont été adaptés à la télévision.

J'ai été transportée par la plume et par l'histoire même si la vie est un peu trop facile pour Valérie.

Aucune difficulté pour se loger, aucun problème d'argent, aucun problème de garde d'enfants, aucun problème pour retrouver un emploi après 10 ans d'absence sur le marché du travail, aucun problème pour rencontrer l'amour... Tout se goupille bien même s'il y a quelques points négatifs par-ci par-là.

J'ai tout de même passer un agréable moment 🙂

Ce livre se lit très facilement mais c'est dommage que dès le début on devine si facilement ce qu'il va se passer dans les 250 pages restantes.

Une jolie romance, qui parle de sujets profonds sous des dehors d'une histoire, presque banale, d'une femme trompée, qui quitte son mari suite à la découverte d'une liaison.
Elle est comme beaucoup, la seule à ne pas le savoir, puisqu'elle a arrêté de travailler pour se marier, faire des enfants, et s'occuper de sa maison. de l'extérieur, elle a tout. de l'intérieur, elle s'ennuie.
Nous suivrons sa reconstruction, sous son nom de jeune fille, puisqu'elle ne veut plus utiliser celui de son mari, lié à la réputation d'un éminent cardiologue.
Les portraits sont bien dessinés, j'ai eu envie d'étrangler le mari plus d'une fois pour un comportement aussi odieux, mais en même temps, quand on lui donne tout, pourquoi changerait-il ?
Un regret tout de même sur la teneur du livre. le sujet est très intéressant et je trouve qu'il aurait pu être creusé un peu plus.
Il reste fort bien écrit et une histoire à lire pour se détendre.
Un roman à lire en vacances, au bord de la mer ou durant un week-end cocooning.

Valerie is the wife of a famous cardiologist and mother of two lovely children. She is also a qualified cardiologist herself, but never practiced her profession after her early marriage. When she realizes that her husband, Matthieu, is a serial philanderer who has now managed to impregnate his latest conquest, she takes the children and moves in with her parents, who come from a much more modest milieu than Matthieu. She finds a job as cardiologist in a rather bad clinic, then in a much better one. She starts dating her divorce lawyer, but has to contend with the jealousy of Ludovic's teenage daughter. Then her son has a nasty fall and she spends a panic-stricken night in the hospital, later allowing Matthieu to drive her home. This leads to a misunderstanding with Ludovic, who believes that a reconciliation has taken place. So he goes off to his native Brittany, leaving Valerie to wonder what went wrong so suddenly in her new romance. During all this time, Matthieu is simultaneously trying to reconquer Valerie, dissociate himself from his pregnant mistress, and hunt for a new girlfriend.

This is an easy read, ideal for an airplane ride. The characters were well drawn, especially Matthieu, who manages both to repel and evoke sympathy. They all evolve in the course of the novel : Valerie realizes that she has very little regret for her marriage and that Matthieu has stifled her for years. Matthieu comes to realize that his decades-long skirt-chasing is finally catching up with him. Laurence, his naive mistress, sees her dream of becoming the second Mrs Keller crushed but rebounds eventually by dating Matthieu's second-in-command.

The main thing that struck me about this book is how easily and casually professional boundaries were crossed. Matthieu is constantly hitting on nurses and female medical students, and everybody in the hospital seems to accept it with a shrug. Ludovic starts dating Valerie, who is his client, despite being warned about it by a colleague. Is this because the book is from the 1990s, or because it is French?

The final comment is that Valerie's two children seem to rebound remarkably well from their parents' separation, which adds to the slight air of unreality of the book.

In summary : well-written escapism with engaging characters.
