In 2011, she was chosen as a 2011 winner of 50 Great Writers You Should be Reading, presented by TheAuthorsShow.com. Her blog www.fidaabbott.blogspot.com received Honorable Mention from BlogNetAwards.com in 2009 and was a Finalist of Christian Indonesian Blogger Festival in 2008, presented by Jawaban.com.
Fida has been writing since she was thirteen. Her first short story was published in the Middle School Magazine in Surabaya, Indonesia, the city where she was born. Her first publication in the local daily newspaper was her poem she wrote when she was in High School. In 2002, she came to the USA and married her American fiancé. With her husband and her daughter, they live in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, a city where she resides and expresses herself in her writings in English and Indonesian.
In the virtual world, Fida is a director of an online writing course, www.pelatihanmenulis.com, as well as KabarIndonesia, an online Indonesian news site based on the citizen reporter, www.kabarindonesia.com. She is also a certified Department of Defense Language Instructor for Bahasa Indonesia, serving United States Air Force (USAF) for online classes. In addition to writing, she is a motivational speaker covering writing and other topics.
Wow, I feel like I know Fida personally and could count her as one of my friends. The style of writing is like a conversation with a friend, I could imagine sitting with coffee and cake and chatting with her. Wonderfully written, it is like a peep into someone's life, warts and all. She is not afraid of writing it as it is, and doesn't sugar coat anything. The fact that English isn't her first language makes the book more personal and readable, and her descriptions of everyday matters are stunningly brought to life with her informal writing style. I would recommend this book, it is a fantastic insight into a 'normal' life - and Fida comes across as a beautiful, warm, kind person.
I have to say that this is one my favorite books I’ve read! I really can picture what she’s going through in this book because English is my second language too, so we have similarities in some ways. Even though I’ve never met Fida in person, I felt like I’ve already known her for a long time. She’s kind, down-to-earth and a very creative person. Hope to read more of her books in the future!
