I’m a great fan of Hildebrand’s work, which is why I tracked down this and a few of his other books from the 1990s. But this one was a bit of a disappointment. The illustrations are not as detailed or strong as most of his other books. The more simplistic style of the art combined with how the stories are laid out, with multiple illustrations overlapping and text in boxes, makes this feel more like a comic book then a picture book. The text is abbreviated into boxes and is written in an almost paraphrased style. Though it’s fine if the reader already knows the story, and most likely do, it doesn’t make for engaging reading.
The one place where aI saw glimpses of Hildebrand’s strengths as an artist were in some of the close ups of face, paeticularly of Rumplestiltskin. It made me realize that faces of men with character as opposed to generically pretty young people seems to be where he shines.
Note: There is another similar book with a similar title Brothers’ Grimm Fairy Tales also illustrated by Greg Hildebrand and published by Unicorn Publishing in 1993 that contains different stories, including Snow White. The ISBN for that book is 0-88101-289-0.

Brothers Grimm stories are Christian stories. The wicked witch, greedy dwarf, and evil Queen are Satanic villains. Satan's power is magic because magic is a lie.
The Prince represents Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. His kiss releases the Bride from death's touch, a beautiful image of the marriage covenant.
