He has written a masterful biography, rich in enlivened critical detail, which more than any other study of Waugh to date, works to redress the bias against its subject that is so representative of Stannard's major two-volume account.

Easily and deservedly THE best biography of Waugh ever written--of that there is no contest. I read this as soon as it was published, and have re-read it probably a dozen times. Immensely learned, carefully researched, cogently and graciously written, this is, quite simply, biographical writing at the very highest level. The other bios of Waugh (Hastings, Sykes, Stannard) are good but not as comprehensive nor certainly as reliable as Patey's, which is, quite simply, superb.
