This story spans half a century of life in an open-all-hours village shop, run by a remarkable family, who have devoted almost every waking moment to hard work in the rural economy. The shop nestles in the River Bain valley, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and fifty years on, it continues to thrive, attracting loyal customers from miles around, including many grateful cyclists and walkers.
Near-universal car ownership and the remorseless ascendence of cut-throat urban supermarkets have seen the demise of countless village shops across the country. But not the Village Shop at Donington on Bain in the Lincolnshire Wolds.
Times have changed, of course. It no longer provides a mobile-shop service to surrounding villages, and its long trading hours have been slightly trimmed. But it’s still open every day, except Christmas Day. And whatever a customer wants, from paintbrush to Prosecco, coal to coffee (freshly-made)... well, Jenny has it all.
This is the gentle but spellbinding story of an extraordinary rural shopkeeping dynasty. Enjoy!
