Hard to rate this one...
I don't know where this came from - it had been sitting on the shelf for a while. I MAY have bought it for my late mother or she may have bought it herself. I am fairly sure I didn't buy it for myself as it really isn't my thing.
The basic theme/story is OK but there are a number of problems. The writing style is very odd - it sounds like Enid Blyton's Famous Five BUT, with some of the more adult themes, it is obviously not a childrens' book or even really YA. There are a huge number of typos and given that my copy was printed in 2001 [though copyright 1988] it obviously didn't get spellchecked at that stage.
The cover of the Pan paperback copy is also odd - a girl in what look likes Victorian costume - but the story itself is set between the two World Wars...The blurb on the rear cover concentrates on part of the story which is set in Canada, but that is only a small part of the overall tale which is set between Ireland and London
It really didn't work for me. I tried to find more information about the author - Susannah Curtis seems to be a pen-name - but using the information from the dedication I managed to identify the author's family, but not specifically where she sat within that family group

A quick easy to read book. I enjoyed reading this book and liked how the story followed the lives of several family members from the same family over 20 years from 1924 to 1945. During the depression years & WWII. Unfortunately it had typos throughout the book which I found annoying. At times the story lines were quite predictable then other story lines had a few surprises. The ending left me wandering about the outcome for some of the characters. While with other characters it was a good ending. But I guess that is what life is like back then when families get separated by war.
