When Teena Dickerson?s new, sensitive, caring, artistic boyfriend, Bruce, transformed into a swearing, beer-swilling hooligan in front of the TV one spring evening, she had to find out the trigger for his unappealing conversion. The new element responsible for the change in her relationship the Stanley Cup playoffs.
She was thus compelled to understand this strange and powerful force men call ?hockey.? In Clueless About Hockey, Teresa illuminates the arcane language of the sport (?butt-ending? and ?chippy play?), the rules (icing), and the rituals (octopus throwing). It?s all the teams, the history, the top players, and the trivia, written with clarity and humour. There are details on women?s hockey, too, including Canada?s medal-winning Olympic teams. (Who, after all, did better than the men!)
Teena is the first to say, ?If you can?t beat?em, join ?em.? In doing, she has uncovered within herself a love for the most revered of winter sports. The ultimate guide for any woman new to the game and the traditions that accompany it, Clueless About Hockey will allow you and your guy to enjoy hockey mania together.
This book is written very sillily; Imagine a very 90s woman with her big hair winking at you while she gushes about hot and sweaty hockey players.
Despite that, it has some of the best hockey information I have ever gotten, as someone who doesn't pay too much attention, and even less so as a spectator, despite playing for 10 or so years.
She runs through the basic rules and strategies in a way that is clearer than other dummies' books and the like. Not too technical, but eminently practical. Also, occasional funny.
The book concludes with the competing lists of best players from each of the three different authors, and gave me a better historical framework for the game than I've ever had. This book was totally readable, totally fun, and only more educational because of both.
It was also a bit hard to find, but I totally recommend tracking it down- especially for new players, parents of players, spouse of fans- etc. It brings more life and color to the game.
