I read this out loud to my two girls and they both loved it! It is the perfect book to practice reading comprehension with my first grader, as each chapter is short and adds just one more essential detail to the story. Not to mention the pictures are beautiful.

When Cara's sister Molly disappears, Cara sets out on a quest to find her. After days of walking she hears that a certain wizard in a castle might be responsible. She is given advise from a tinker and an old man, and uses the simple things her mother gave her to rescue her sister and defeat the wizard.

"Cara and the Wizard" comes in a set of 4 books called "Stories From Around the World". This was darker and more sinister than the others. The wizard comes to a violent end. Perhaps this is more the style of Irish folklore, but as a story it was a bit scary for the intended audience. I loved Valeria DoCampo's illustrations, full color on every page.

“Cara and the Wizard” from the Magic Stories book series is based on Nic Leodhas’ Irish tale “The Lass Who Went Out At The Cry of Dawn”, retold here by Liz Flanagan and beautifully illustrated by Valeria Docampo. The story follows Cara and Molly, sisters who are the best of friends. One day Molly is taken by a mean and powerful wizard and rather than give up hope, Cara decides to face the odds in an attempt to get her sister back. She meets some characters along the way and even though she is on a mission herself she still takes the time to be kind to these passersby. In return for her kindness, they dispense Cara words of advice that come in very handy to help her defy the wizard’s evil spells and retrieve her sister!
This was the first book we received with our Giggle Girls Book Club www.gigglegirlsbookclub.com membership, and it was a really great pick for Dolly! Big, bold and vibrant colors in the illustrations kept her entranced. As a fan of Irish folklore, I enjoyed this book and appreciate its adaptation for small children and the overall messages of having courage, helping others, being kind, showing bravery when you most need to, and more. (Any book that has a female heroine get a gold star in my book – the world does not need any more damsels in distress!) The Giggle Girls Book Club sent a nice bookmark with the book. As simple as it may seem, teaching a child to read and saving their page with a bookmark makes it that much more fun for them. I can promise you that bookmark will not remain on that same page for long!

"Cara and the Wizard" is a retold Irish tale about two inseparable sisters (Cara and Molly) who love each other dearly. One day Molly disappears off the face of the earth, which meant that Cara went on an adventure to rescue her sister from the Wizard in the Castle.

This early readers book aimed at those aged 6 and over is beautifully illustrated and well constructed with short chapters all introducing a different theme each. It also includes some discussion points to explore the story further and to expand the child's learning and imagination.

This book would be great for a class reading but also for those who would like to read independently so they can examine the illustrations closer as they are a integral part of the tale being told.

A story about a young woman who goes out into the world to rescue her sister and ends up saving two other people along the way. She uses her wits and her strength to defeat an evil wizard, and lives happily ever after.

A good story about female empowerment, sisterhood, courage, and strength for young readers.

The beautiful, vibrant illustrations in this early/beginning reader are beguiling! I really loved that even though Clara was on her own quest, she took the time to be kind to the people she met along the way. A great lesson for our little ones, especially since her kindness was very rewarded!
