I thought this book was like a cross between The Natural and The Great Gatsby. It doesn't rise to the heights of those works, but it makes for an enjoyable and thought provoking read. Like Malmud's This one of those baseball books that's about so much more than baseball. The overall effect is morally ambiguous and quite a bit darker than I anticipated.
