"Jane Doe"; can't remember anything that happened before the plane crash that almost took her life. Burned and scarred beyond recognition, she learns that no one can identify her. When her memory returns, she, like a nightingale, learns to sing her most beautiful song when the night is the darkest. This is a beautiful story of how one small act of kindness can greatly influence the life of another.
I enjoyed reading this short fictional story based on an airplane accident in 1982. This is not a true story like one other reader commented. (See the dedication page.) As the book progresses, I liked that the reader learns several profound lessons.
Wonderful short story that makes you want to reach out and help others in need. Jane Doe was the woman that survived a plane crash, but who wasn't listed on the manifest and had amnesia. She was severly burned and disfigured by her injuries and after a year; she was still self conscience of her "monster" appearance. A virtual stranger, Lauren Michell invited Jane into her home with her husband and two children and started the real healing for Jane. She found that some things triggered memory, but not a full recollection. One of the children, 4 yr. old Lacie was convinced that Jane was her lost Aunt Kellie. She turned out to be right. Kellie's full memory was restored after she risked her life to save her 2 yr old nephew, Matthew from burning in a fire. She was unable to have the strength to get them both out, but felt someone help them to safety. While recovering she remembered being on the burning plane with her fiance, Michael on her way home to share the news of their engagement. The last minute change in her going on the plane made it so she wasn't on the manifest. She had a after death experience where she was told by Our Savior to "Feed my sheep." She recovered from the experience and got reconstruction surgery, then became a social worker where she helps in the Lord's errands. Bad things happen to good people, but nothing escapes God's eyes. One of God's greatest gift for us is each other.

This book is AMAZING! Not only is it a REALLY good Christmas story...BUT...it also tells how we need to love each other for what is on the inside...not how we look on the outside! When Lauren goes to the hospital for a Christmas visit... She meets Jane Doe. Jane was in a terrible plane crash and now cannot remember who she is or any of her past. She is also badly burned and doesn't have the money for skin grafts. Lauren invites Jane to come live with her family until she can make it on her own. Jane is surprised that her family welcomes her with love and acceptance....Instead of fear and repulsion. Through Lauren's kindness Jane learns to live again. A beautiful twist at the end leaves your heart wanting Christmas all year round.
A few simple changes could have taken this from a 2 to a 3.5. 1) Very little to no sense of place - I was floundering trying to figure out where we were. 2) The front says it is based on something in 1982... and yet there is a cell phone? totally took me out of the story. 3) This one would be spoiler, so how can I word it so it isn't...set up/pay off. A little bit more done in the set up would have made the pay off more believable and satisfying.
On the positive side - the love shown by the family is wonderful and moving.
My daughter and I really liked this book. The main character in this book loses her memory and is badly burned in an airplane crash. She is invited to live in the home of a woman who meets her in the hospital.
I happened upon this book by chance at the library - it was completely in the wrong place on the shelves. It is a bit sappy and rather unbelievable, as much Christian fiction can be. But it is a delightful story about seeing people beyond outward appearances and providing love regardless.
A short story of love and acceptance of a person burned and scarred beyond recognition. It shows what kindness can do to influence another persons life.
