After her parent’s divorce, Gabrielle is sent to live with her dad in a one bedroom apartment and that’s where she starts acting out. She begins staying out late, sneaking boys in the apartment when her dad isn’t home, getting tattoos, and piercings. Her sister, Dee went to live with her mom, but they kept a close relationship through it all. All of her wild ways seem to come to an end when she met Tre’ Johnson. Tre’ Johnson works as a general manager of a local mortgage company, single, and no kids which seem like a perfect match for Gabrielle. Gabrielle soon finds out what glitters isn’t always gold.

After reading this book the first thing that came to my mind was a quote from Maya Angelou - "The first time someone shows you who they are, believe them." As much as I wanted to scream or shake the hell out of some these characters, I was sadly reminded that incidents like this goes on every day. I could definitely relate to this story, because I have been in a few situations like this or knew people that have went through it. Sometimes we chose to ignore that silent alarm that goes off warning of us impending heartbreak, but no matter what there is always a lesson in our suffering.

There were a few typos and grammatical errors in this book, but it didn’t affect the flow of the story. I would definitely recommend this book for young adults and adults as well. Maybe reading this book will save a few young adults from making some unnecessary mistakes.

****

The Truth Will Come Out

I am not sure if this book is based on personal experiences or not, but I will say this is a story I have read many times before. There was nothing unique about the naive younger woman who believes the sun sets and rises with her man. Gabrielle puts all her trust in Tre' and time and time again he disappoints her. I followed along to see if she would ever wise up.

Love is not supposed to hurt, or so they say. When you love the ground he walks on, you will accept anything he sends your way. So is the case with Gabby. Tre' could do no wrong. I spent my time wondering when she was going to get a clue. Please don't misunderstand me I know this happens every day. Hell, I've been struck by the love bug too. I have some things in my past I'm not so proud of that I accepted. My disappointment is that nothing in this book was new and fresh, coupled with the timeline not always being clear and concise. Some facts seem to be forgotten, one day she’s struggling and going to school, the next no mention of school.

This wasn't a long book which I'm glad of. I found it all too predictable. I had to laugh a few times as Gabby talked directly to readers, asking questions she already knew the answers to. I will say the story is well written just unfortunate it had no twists and turns.

Gabrielle got into her share of trouble when she was younger. She ended up moving into an apartment with her dad. Her sister Dee moved into their grandma's house along with their mom. Gabrielle became involved with a boy named Tre' . He seemed like such a nice guy and she couldn't wait to have a future with him. Boy was she in for a surprise.

Gabrielle turned out to be such a nice young woman, but she just didn't seem to have the self-confidence that she needed. She just let herself stay in situations that she should not have been in. She was way too nice to Tre'. The words that Tre' used to describe Gabrielle--COME ON! He should have looked in the mirror first because he had no place to talk! She really should have went with her instincts, but she learned the hard way.

I really enjoyed reading Misconceptions! It was a page turner and was a quick read. C. Hayes came up with characters that were believable and a scenerio that is all too real. There were a few typographical errors and spelling errors, but nothing that made the book difficult to read. I would recommend this book!

Misconceptions by C. Hayes

Gabrielle Payne grew up witnessing her parents abusive relationship. They eventually divorced but Gabby began acting out and getting into trouble. After graduating from high school, she decided to move in with her father. Even though he was strict, she still managed to get into mischief behind his back. Gabby was a hood chick looking for love in all the wrong places.

Gabby met a guy by the name of Tre Johnson at a local seafood restaurant. He was a general manager of a local mortgage company. He was six years older, single and didn't have any kids so they began dating. Where will this relationship go?

Misconceptions is a quick read about a young girl finding love, or what she thought was love. Gabby was on the rebellious side. You'll experience her ups and downs. Your emotions will range from anger to joy. Gabby is a female we all know or have been.

I gave Misconceptions three stars because of a few grammatical errors that pulled my attention away from the storyline. Even though a few areas felt a little rushed to me, the book was good overall.

**I won this book through Good Reads First Reads**

This book has potential maybe with some better editing??

I could not connect to any of the characters-and no it had nothing to do with me being a white girl reading about a black woman. It had to do with the fact there there was no depth or development of character and really no depth of story at all.

I was bored the entire time-didn't really care what happened one way or the other. I finished the book because it was only 100 and something pages long. If I wouldn't have finished it I would have been disappointed in myself.

Obviously Tre' was a cheating jerk and Gabrielle was needy and I think that dynamic is in a lot of relationships. I didn't feel like Gabrielle was excessively dependent of Tre' at all like a lot of other reviewers have felt. I think she reacted like a lot of other women would have reacted. Just kind of disbelief and heartache over the lost relationship.

Overall, the story was ok, but the writing style and dialog were extremely lacking.

Baton Rouge author Cosha Hayes makes the earnest attempt to be a modern-day Terry McMillan in her debut novel, "Misconceptions".
While it misses the mark as a new "Waiting to Exhale," it hits dead-on as a cautionary tale for a young adult, female audience. Set it Louisiana's capital city, "Misconceptions" chronicles the life of Gabby who falls for a handsome young man, Tre. The book tells how Gabby’s transition from “a teenager who was going no where fast” to a young woman who believes she has found the love of her life, but soon realizes she is an emotionally and physically abusive relationship.
Hayes does a great job setting the scene for and bringing the old saying to life that “everything that glitters isn’t gold.” It’s Hayes’ simple and fast paced writing style that make this book a good read for a young woman who is approaching a storm in life. BuyTheBook. -cjames

I heard about this book in a group on Facebook, and decided to support the author.
And i must say, if you're looking for a book to grab you and make you love and hate the characters at the same time, then look no further. Misconceptions is def that and more. The lead female character in my opinion was a misconception all of her own, she was up then down, in love then bitter, angry then sad. Can someone say ZANEX (might be misspelled but you know what i mean) needed asap! LOL all her drama and emotional outbursts made the book a great read. Misconceptions was a quick, but complete reading and im sorry it took me so long to finally get around to writing this review.
Great going C. Hayes!

Gabrielle background had her searching for her Knight in Shining Armour and she thinks she has met the one with Tre'. Tre' appears to be the total package for anyone and definitely the stability Gabrielle needs and crave.

As the story progresses, Gabrielle finds out that his is not her prince and she begins to wonder if she really knows her husband. The story continues and Gabrielle gathers the strength to move on with her life.

The book is a quick read but sometimes there were instances where the storyline appeared to be rushed. Great subject matter to discuss but I wish there would have been just a little bit more.

I highly recommend this book. I really enjoyed this book. It can be read in one sitting. Its easy to read. It also held my attention. I think everyone can relate to some of the experiences, and feelings that the main character Gabby experienced. The characters and situations are real.
