For the last little while, when I have visited my father, he has told me to take some of my inheritance home with me - that inheritance being the contents of his library. This is one the books I brought home recently.

Published in Australia's bicentennial year, this is a collection of writings from the overseas battlefields between the Boer War and the Vietnam War. This is not just a literary journey, but a visual one as well. Paintings, drawings, and photographs intersperse the writing, and bring an extra dimension to what you are reading.

This is not a general history of a particular war or battle, but the history of Australia's involvement in war by the people who served.

Funny, ironic, troubling, emotionally raw, this is a window into the thoughts of individuals who were in places and situations that many of us would not want to be.

Given the time when the included articles, stories, and books were written, there are some points of view and some language used in them that today are distinctly distasteful and there were a few raised eyebrows when I was reading the book.
