Beastmode

Rate this book
The King, raised in the hood with his family, saw a lot of suffering. He witnessed death and destruction within his own family—poverty and desperation of his own people. Instead of being part of the problem, he became part of the solution and rose to the top of his game. In his mind…it was survival.

After an encounter with a brilliant scientist, King began to plot something so huge, that no one would see it coming or be able to stop the cycle…not even the police.

A different flip on the door game

I really liked this the Taylor family was dope. I liked how they pushed to help the black families while the police and blacks worked hard to no avail to destroy all the blacks. No matter how hard they tried it didn't work and they ended up getting killed. The Taylor's got away but they left the good in good standing

No Cigar!

I normally don’t talk about other people’s reviews in mine, but right about now I am scratching my head and wondering what book everyone else read. You like apples and I like oranges. You have your opinion and I have mine. Well I’m not talking about that here. You can like what you wanna like, but when a book is fundamentally flawed and you overlook that, something is wrong. An author can’t grow and fix what’s wrong if you don’t point it out. So let me tell you about the book I read.

“Beastmode” by newcomer Joe Awsum (I like that name) tells the story of one ambitious family. Sixteen-year-old twins Twon and Qwon wake on Christmas morning to find their mother dead of an overdose. It’s an intentional overdose and she leaves the boys a cryptic note about their future. Life as the twins know it has ended. Will the boys step up to the plate to meet their new destiny?

Okay, that’s all I can say without giving the book away. A lot happens from there. The a lot happening is where the book goes wrong. “Beastmode” simply relies on too many coincidences, many of which are downright unbelievable. Yes, this is a work of fiction and as such an author is allowed to take certain liberties, but this read more like fantasy. Readers are asked to believe too many things, to take constant leaps of faith and to throw logic out the window. That can be fine in itself, but readers need something to base the unbelievable and illogical on, and the author does not provide that. “Beastmode” lacks in development of plot and character. The delivery is very choppy. There are editing issues. I could not connect with the characters. I had no feeling for them, did not care what happened to them. I was just curious to see what would happen with the plot, how the author would tie everything together and I hoped that the ending would justify the means. It did not. Instead, it appears this book will fall victim to the sequel/trilogy/series plague. Now, with that said, this book is not unredeemable. The majority of its flaws can be fixed with the aid of a good and qualified developmental and copy editor.

What I liked and what saved this book from a 1-star rating (hated it) is its unique and interesting concept. On that alone I couldn’t hate this book. I didn’t like it (hence the 2 stars) but I didn’t hate it. Joe is on to something, doing what I haven’t read anyone else in this genre doing. We need more authors like that, being ambitious and thinking outside the box. However, the poor execution almost buried it. Awsum put forth a valiant effort and I give him credit for that. I would love to see this book redone with heavy emphasis on developmental editing and realism.

Now that’s the REAL on the book that I read. I don’t know what everyone else read.

Royalty, Loyalty and the Hood

Twins Twon and Qwon had no idea the legacy that laid ahead for them, or how quickly their lives would change after their mother’s death. Christmas day 2001 brought joy and sadness to the twins’ world. They awoke that morning to pairs of Jordan tennis shoes and their mother’s overdose. The letter their mother left for them explaining her overdose let the twins know something greater was in store for them. That letter led the twins to a family reunion with their Uncle Red, a sister they didn’t know existed, and the father they haven’t seen since his incarceration when they were six. Tyler Scott aka King let his children know they were destined for greatness in the hood and gave them the plan to claim their rightful place on top.

“Beastmode” by Joe Awsum is an excellent novel. It was fast paced and action packed from beginning to end. The story moved and transitioned very well, keeping me eagerly turning pages. If “Beastmode” were a movie, it would have you on the edge of your seat the entire time! “Beastmode” is a five in my library!

Joe Awsum tells a tale of sacrifice, loyalty, and deceit. The story line flows effortlessly. It has a little bit of everything. Real life issues, street life, and heartbreak. There were even moments that I had to laugh. Those twins are a trip. Hopefully there is a sequel. Cannot wait to see what is next for Mr. Joe Awsum. I sat here for a moment thinking what I could say about Beastmode without giving away the story. I must say that this one of the best books I have read to date, it only took a few hours to finish and once I was done I must say that I am truly impressed. It got my vote on that fact that not only was every paged filled with action, but also stood out with creativity. It points out a lot facts that are happening in black communities that a lot of people are refusing to believe exist, either don't care or just flat out ignore. Joe Awsum gave you a great story to read but also left you with something to think about. I will be sure to tell all my reading buddies about this one, letting them know they are in store for a great read that's filled with non-stop action, some laughter and scenes that make you go Mmgh. Five stars for me.

Beastmode was on fire from the very beginning to the end! I loved how the author displayed a positive message in his book by moving the drugs out of the hood, for the better of the people. I also loved how King used his children as a plot for his revenge, how the community came together as a whole and cleaned it up. I loved the unity in this book and the twisted surprise at the very end. I can't wait for part 2!

Joe Awsum did an amazing job with this book! There aren't very many books that you can say you experienced raw reality w/a side of comedy, gotta love the characters we are introduced to. This book will have you searching for earplugs to stay away from interruptions and leave you searching for the next fix!! 5 stars sir! I can't wait until Pt.2 drops!

This was a really good book. I heard mixed reviews which made me nervous about reading this book. There were some things that were left unsaid and questions that were left unanswered. I can only hope these things will be answered in the sequel. There were editing issues but nothing that could take away from the story. I'm looking forward to more from this author.

This is what you call thinking outside the box. Even though their was a lot of unbelievable moments in the book I still loved it. Joe went out and did what most authors are afraid to do and accomplished his goal. I have no complaints about the book. It was definitely a page turner. I read this book in 1 1/2 days. All I can say is I love it.......I recommend everybody ready this book.

It was a good read but alot of the events were unrealistic in my opinion and that may be what caused me to rate it a 3. Maybe a younger generation would enjoy it more so than me. I enjoyed the story over all though.

Loved this book. First book I have read from Joe Awsum and was so impressed. This book made me wish these things could happen in real life. To get the drugs out of the hood would be fantastic. Looking forward to reading the next one.
