Mastering Celtx

Rate this book
Until recently, available screenwriting tools--built around traditional discrete roles and tethered to paper output--have struggled to keep up with the rapid changes in industry practices and needs. However, a new tool called Celtx (pronounced kel-tx) has embraced the industry's evolution and created a preproduction workspace that erases the boundaries between different conceptualizing and narrative-building tasks, such as storyboarding, outlining, media asset management, and scriptwriting. This book is for small-shop media professionals, independent film and video makers, media arts professors and students, ad-hoc media production teams, "pro-am" media creators, and aspiring screenwriters, storyboard artists, or comic book creators who want to maximize their creativity using Celtx. You will be introduced to the essential Celtx toolset (as well as to the Celtx Script app, Celtx Studio, and Celtx add-ons) and will learn how to apply Celtx to a variety of projects and workflows. A companion website includes downloadable practice files and images so you can work through the book's many tutorials. This is the only book you need to master Celtx and take your screenwriting and storyboarding projects to the next level.

If you are a writer and want to branch out into screenwriting, writing for the theater, writing comic books, or just doing novels, the right software can make a world of difference. Those who want to write movie scripts or plays in particular must be careful that scripts are in accepted format. Anything else screams "Amateur!" and can (and will) result in your script finding its way into the trash rather than being read.

Screenwriting software is very expensive and I have found that that the the top two have some very unpleasant quirks (imagine blowing a bundle on it and using it for 2 years only to have it suddenly demand a registration code and act like it doesn't know you only to have the developer tell you the only fix is to shell out several hundred dollars for a new one).

Enter Celtx. Celtx is completely free to download (at https://www.celtx.com )and it has all of the features of the big pricey boys with none of the annoying quirks. Free! This is a full featured software and works like a dream. Many pros use it because of this, even those who started out using the expensive ones because Celtx has all of the features you need. There is also a huge community of Celtx users who offer help and info sharing in help forums.

There is only one problem. Celtx does not come with a handbook but author Terry Borst has solved that for us with this wonderful book. Just so you know that Terry Borst knows what he is talking about, he has been a member of the Writer's Guide of America for a long time, wrote a column on screenwriting for their official publication, and has been a working screenwriter since the 1980's doing feature films, tv movies, globally syndicated episodic television, and award winning video games. He also teaches screenwriting at the college level. Celtx is what Borst uses and he knows this software inside out.

This book is excellent. It takes you by the hand and walks along with you as you learn to use the free Celtx software, even offering screen shots so you will SEE as well as read about what buttons to press and what things will look like. I LOVE this feature. This book covers absolutely everything you need to know and you will be practicing within an hour of starting, maybe less. Everything is clear, goes step by step, and makes learning this goof-proof. You can't fail and the best thing is that with a book, you can have it right there with you as you work in Celtx so you can refer to it. Try that if you use some online resource!

I highly recommend the software and this book.

This book is helping me so much. I'm an independent artist who does cost effective productions. I've worked with Celtx in a very basic capacity for years, but as I am working on my first film, I decided that I wanted to use this software as the main software for my production. This is a great tool, and this book has been a lifesaver for me. Easy to follow along, I don't think I would have ever figured out half of what I've learned so far on my own.
