As a boy, the main character befriends a lighthouse keeper. When he returns home years later as an adult, he is given a mysterious package containing the old lighthouse keeper's diary from 1840 when he served on the Evening Star. The main character discovers why the lighthouse keeper never talked about it.
I thought the story would have been better without the frame story because the lighthouse keeper's story, told through his journal, seemed rushed. I didn't think the illustrations added to anything to the story.
