I really enjoyed this as it concentrated on the background re the two main political parties and their support work plus the media circus around it.

This was so addictive and the tension just ramped up.

I was given an advance copy by bloodhound books but the review is entirely my own.

I couldn't put this book down even though the antics of the characters had me pulling my hair out. It's far too close to the truth to be comfortable. A general election campaign is full of muck throwing and underhand tactics in order to win the prize of becoming the next Prime Minister. I look forward to reading more from this author.

A different style to the books I normally choose but I couldn’t put this book down, I was absolutely hooked right from the first page. An extremely well written book, it’s hard to believe this is a debut novel. I loved how we got to know the characters more as the story developed, and I became fully invested in finding out what happened to them.

Thank you Bloodhound books for the ARC copy of this book, I thoroughly enjoyed it & will be keeping an eye out for further books from the author! (Review entirely my own)

Polls Apart is the debut novel from Clare Stephen-Johnson and a gripping piece of contemporary fiction focusing on the lives of the key characters involved in a British General Election campaign. At the centre of the story are Anna Lloyd and her husband Richard Williams. As the novel opens, Richard is leader of the SDP, the main opposing parliamentary party and Anna, an actress is causing controversy with her latest choice of acting role. Polls Apart follows the couple through the election campaign, ending shortly after the election has been decided, charting the ups and downs of the campaign and the couple’s personal life and the effects of the two factors on each other.

The novel reads like an inside view of the political, press and public relations worlds and is entirely and often shockingly believable. Each chapter is titled with a press headline and begins with an extract from the UK Newswire on a particular day. This simple format sets up a brilliant contrast between the reported ‘facts’ and the actual events that are described in the story and emphasises just how manipulative both the political and press machines can be. The story is set over a very short period; March-May 2009 and is quite a short novel at under 300 pages but Clare Stephen-Johnston certainly packs a punch with a dramatic and fast-paced storyline and numerous twists to the tale. I found myself completely caught up in Anna and Richard’s lives and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see how both the election campaign and their personal lives would turn out in the end.

Anna is an intriguing character; a mix of confidence, ambition and vulnerability as we first meet her but as the story progressed and more of her past and background are revealed, I found myself liking her more and more and really rooting for her. I was less taken by Richard immediately but he did grow on me as the book progressed and I found the tension between their political and personal lives fascinating. Clare really has got inside the heads of her characters and their reactions to events and feelings are very well captured making this an emotional read. But it’s not just the main characters whose emotions are experty detailed; the supporting cast are excellent too and I loved the way Clare used the characters to make me think about the many sides to every story. I particularly liked young tabloid journalist Marie – her story had me almost as gripped as the main one!

This is an excellent debut and I’d highly recommend it to readers looking for a fresh, contemporary and gripping read.

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for providing an ARC of this book.

I had a definite love/hate relationship with the characters in this book and got really cross with some of their actions. Having said that, I enjoyed reading more about the shenanigans that went on - and probably really do go on - behind the scenes in the political arena.

As the author is a journalist, I'm sure she has a good insight into what happens within the newspaper industry, and this novel doesn't portray either the industry or politics in a very good light. It does, however, make for a really good read.

The novel was quite fast-paced and well-written, in my opinion, and I really liked the way the novel was laid out, using newspaper headlines/articles. I would definitely look out for more by this author.

ANATOMY OF AN ELECTION AND A RELATIONSHIP
A relationship between and politician and an actress can be a tricky situation but add an election for Prime Minister to the mix and the drama is inevitable.

In Polls Apart, Clare Johnston weaves the story of Anna Lloyd an actress who is trying to make her career work while being married to the SDP candidate for Prime Minister. Her career choices come under scrutiny by the public but also her husband, Richard Williams, and his party, especially her choice to play a lap dancing serial killer.
As in the case of the real-life People’s Princess this “princess” and her husband become targets of the tabloid press which wreaks havoc with their relationship. The story also sheds light on just how much power the political spin doctors wield on their candidate clients.
This was an enjoyable read with a great deal of action which keeps the story moving at a fast pace. I am not a huge fan of political novels, but this one kept my interest by bringing in the reality of the relationship issues that come with fame and power. The characters were well-developed, and the story line was fast paced and enjoyable. I recommend this book to readers of all genres.

I had never been a fan of politics and avoided it at all costs. That is until I accidentally clicked on CNN back in 2020 looking for something to watch. They were covering the Biden and Trump election and being anti Trump (more the man than the politics), I thought I would just watch a bit. Well a bit turned into a 3 week obsession where I could not tear myself away from it, staying up until all hours of the morning due to the time difference. I just could not get enough!

When I was given the opportunity to read Polls Apart, I jumped at the chance. My feelings about politics is so different now and I was looking forward to getting a behind the scenes account in this book. Well, I certainly got that and more with this tale! It covers the seedier side of an election campaign, a tit for tat mudsling on the opposing candidates as they try to sway voters, the role journalists play, some with their own agenda, reporting stories whether true or not and how appearances are everything, even at the risk of losing the one you say you love the most.

This is a well written and believable account of what goes on away from the public eye. With a strong cast of characters that bring it all to life, I throughly enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more from Clare Johnston.

I can honestly say I absolutely loved this and really struggled to put it down !!!! Am generally not a fan of politics but this is so much more.

Richard is leader of the opposition and is striving to win the next general election and move into No10 Downing Street. He is married to Anna, an actress, who can never seem to do anything right in the eyes of Richards advisors.

We join Anna and Richard in the weeks leading up to the general election. Mud is slung in every direction and the press are having a field day, but these are people with normal problems and relationships. We see how the headlines effect everything, even if some of them aren’t true.

This is a great book that I really didn’t want to put down. I wanted to find out what was going to happen next and how it would affect Anna and her husband, as well as those around them. The characters are really well developed and completely believable, even if some of their actions aren’t the best. Even if, like me, you are not a fan of politics you will regret not reading this book !!

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for a digital copy of this book.

Anna and Richard are the perfect celebrity couple. A popular actress and a leading politician, grabbing the headlines with whatever they do.
But when the general election is announced, and Richard is looking likely to win, opposition parties strive to find the skeletons in their closets, digging deep to find them and then splash them in the headlines.
What effect will this have on their marriage? Their friends and families? And other people involved?
What an amazing book this is! The way in which each character is developed and nurtured through the story is completely engaging and the reader is left with such different views of a character as they read through the book. I also wonder if Clare Johnstone wrote the current government in the book (not great guys in my opinion), with a model in mind?
The writing is quickly paced and engaging. The characters are believable and can be both liked and hated. The plot contained various twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. All in all, an enjoyable (and all too believable) read.

This was a very enjoyable read about political opponents and their campaigns in the run up to a forthcoming election.

It is a very interesting account of what goes on during a campaign and the awful impact of dirty smear campaigns on the people involved, and their friends and families. We are also treated to this from the newspaper reporter's perspective. Marie doesn't emerge unscathed also.

The character of Anna, Richard's wife, was quite good and easy to like and cheer for. I even felt sorry for Marie, the reporter, and her dilemma about needing to do her job to pay her mortgage while also being increasingly repulsed by what she is asked to do to just generate a sensationalist story for her paper whose owner is determined to ensure the incumbent PM retains his seat.

I found the story totally gripping and quite realistic and highly recommend it.

Thanks to Bloodhound for sending me a copy of this book to read and review, this is not one of the usual genres of books that I would read but I have to say I really enjoyed reading this book. I was intrigued by the book and the author kept me guessing and sitting on the edge of my seat as I didn’t know what was going to unfold.

The book is set in the lead up to the general election and follows the life of the Richard Williams who is running for Prime Minister and his actress wife Anna. I was taken through the journey of the ups and downs of a political race, the dirty tricks and smear campaigns and how it effects the Politian and there nearest and dearest as well as those on the campaign trail.

I don’t want to give to much away as not to spoil the unfolding of the book, and I will definitely look forward to the next book from Clare Johnston.

Great read - love, betrayal and political dirty tricks during a British election
Popular actress, Anna Lloyd, shares her husband's dream of him becoming the British Prime Minister. But during the election campaign she starts to realise how his success could change her life and career. She is under pressure from her husband to take only 'suitable' acting roles and, when the press get hold of devastating secrets from her past life, his political advisors see her as a liability. When those closest to her betray her trust, she turns to her sister for support. Can her marriage and career survive further revelations?

Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the review copy of this thoroughly enjoyable book.

I enjoyed this suspenseful story. This is a well written story about forgiveness, secrets and consequences for choices made. I enjoyed being pulled into the story by the characters. I also enjoyed the author's writing style and how easy the story was to read. It is a fast paced story that will make you question your decisions and the actions for those decisions. The characters are relateable and brought the story to life on each page. This is a hard to put down story that has twists and turns that you dont want to miss. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. A great suspenseful story that I highly recommend. It is a great pick up that you wont regret picking up.

This is my honest unbiased review of a arc book I received with thanks from Bloodhound Books.
I was very surprised to find this was a Debut Novel from this author, I certainly look forward to reading more of her books.
I very much enjoyed reading this book, normally I probably wouldn't have picked a political thriller. I am so glad I was given the opportunity, I would have been so sorry to have missed out on this book. It had me glued wondering what other press bombshell would come next. Certainly some dirty politics written into a captivating well written plot, which keeps you captured and guessing right till the very end.
I certainly enjoyed this book from beginning to end.

I love political dramas and being able to link them to current events. This is set in 2009 where Richard, leader of the SDP opposition is striving to become PM at the widely expected General Election. Kelvin Davis, PM and leader of the alliance party has other ideas.

Anna, Richard’s wide, is an actress and the parts she takes do not necessarily confirm with Richard’s political ambitions. How much of a problem will this be?

A well written book with good characters and an entanglement of politics and love - which will be triumphant?

Definitely worth reading whether you like politics or not.

A great read that gets very in-depth with the muck throwing from both political parties in the lead up to a general election.

Each chapter starts with a news headline for the day and there’s an excellent ‘will they/won’t they’ between Richard, leader of the SDP hoping to win the election and his wife Anna, an actress who takes on a role considered a little too risqué for a woman of her position. Things turn sour when Richard dumps Anna and she retaliates by going to events for the other side. Further interventions and twists become evident when we learn that Richard’s advisor Henry is married to Joy, Anna’s personal assistant!

I really enjoyed this! A political drama, and I can imagine pretty accurately reflects the goings on during an election campaign, and is a topic I haven’t read a book about previously. But whilst campaigning and dealing with all the political mud-slinging, Anna and Richard are also dealing with personal problems and some skeletons that come out of the closet. This is very much a human story, that of all the people who get caught up in the dirty campaigning, the consequences of which are far reaching.

I found this a very easy read despite dealing with some difficult topics. Would absolutely recommend.

I really enjoyed this book. Thanks to Bloodhound books for sending me a copy to read and review.
Set over the weeks leading up to a general election, this follows the leader of the opposition and his actress wife as they face a series of revelations about their personal life, and the impact this has on the campaign.
I'm not sure how realistic it was, but it was entertaining, moved along at a good pace, and the characters were likeable and believable. Can't ask much more from a book!!
Would thoroughly recommend. I shall look out for more by this author.

Interesting novel set during the fictional UK General Election of 2009. The book focuses on the race between the two leaders and sensational stories in the Sunday paper The Echo. Their are revelations about the actress wife of the leader of the SDP revealing a spell as an escort, this backfires a bit as it leads to revelations about her past. More things are revealed and the run up to the election is a close race with polls going up and down as each new revelation hits The Echo's front page.
Not my usual genre to read, but I enjoyed it.

Interesting read about the weeks before the fictional general election for Prime Minister in England, inside scoop of the way that polls shift according to what tabloids expose, whether the stories are real or not, about the candidates and their inner circle.
I liked this debut novel by the author, she was able to throughout the book makes you despise no then like the characters, she character developed them in a perfect way to make the reader feel their pain, happiness and inner thoughts and feelings.
I truly enjoyed reading this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
The dialogue was sparkling. Each character had their own voice and they had depth to them. Anna was character that I warmed to. Her story came out in little pieces and each piece added to the story.
Even if you are not into politics this is still an excellent of secrets and betrayal. Machiavelli had nothing on this cast of politicians and entourage.
I read this as an ARC from the publisher the review is my own opinion.

Thoroughly enjoyable book showing the rollercoaster events in the lives of Richard Williams and his wife Anna in the lead up to a general election. The book deals with press and how their deep investigations into peoples' past can affect them years later. The book really draws you in to the lives of these people and the political roundabout that precedes a general election. Great work.
My thanks to Arc Bloodhound Books who gave me this book in return for a review.

I belong to a pre-publication reading group and was offered this book to read and review. It probably wouldn't have come up on my radar normally but I was intrigued by the blurb and asked to read it.
Not being a great fan of politics I wasn't sure I would enjoy it but was very pleasantly surprised. The lead characters are genuine and likeable and I was soon fascinated by the wheeling and dealing of a very believable election campaign. Very enjoyable read.

I was lucky enough to be given an ARC by Bloodhound Books in exchange for a review.

This was not my normal read but I was intrigued by the political angle in the synopsis. The book follows the run up to the general election of 2009 and the mud slinging from both sides.

I had a love hate with the characters in this book. The story moved along quickly and I liked the insertion of the news reports.

Overall an enjoyable read.

This story takes you through the political campaign trail of two candidates going head to head including the juicy scandals that pop up as they fight for the votes! Richard appears to have the perfect life as the successful politician married to the beautiful actress Anna! But as the campaigning gets down to the wire the opposition pulls out all the stops and everyone’s secrets are exposed on the front page of the paper!

Who will you vote for?

A really good book by a previously unknown(to me) author. Kept me up late reading it.
The plot has been discussed by others on here so I won’t add to all that but suffice to say that it’s about the leader of a political party in the UK who is gunning to win an election and wants to top the incumbent PM.
Good character drawing all the way through and one can really empathise with the characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed it!

this is not the sort of book I usually read however it was a good read, well written and you get drawn into the story. The characters are a little annoying in the way they do things, but that's the way the book is written, you kind of get drawn in and I certainly did not want to put it down until I got to the end. Well worth reading.
