"Here is the factual account of Young Joseph Smith. He showed traits of the strong prophet he became even at age twelve.
"Go with young Joseph from his humble beginnings in New England to the glorious vision, to his early manhood in western New York. Let this account, by Ivan J. Barrett, the most outstanding dramatist/scholar in the Church today, whisk you through those developing years of Young Joseph."
I actually got this book a little by accident, but I thought I'd give it a try. It was good, but I didn't love it. It was a good introduction, but Most of the information in it wasn't really new. I did enjoy some primary sources relating to the 2nd Great Awakening. On the whole, I think this book is better suited to someone young rather than an adult. For adults, I would definitely recommend the History of Joseph Smith by his mother rather than this book.
