Books for the earliest readers often lack an interesting storyline or humor due to the limited vocabulary necessary. Who Is Coming? is a simple reader but has a funny ending, making it better than your average "see Spot run" type of reader.
For a book of its size, and one designed to teach reading through use of repetition, Who Is Coming? is an unusually sophisticated, smart book. You really can't go wrong with a Patricia C. McKissack story, no matter what its size or scope.
In this book, a little monkey flees from constant harrowing danger in the jungles of Africa, until there is one dangerous beast that doesn't cause him to run.
I would definitely recommend this book as the gold standard for early readers, and I'd give it one and a half stars.
Who Is Coming? is an adorable Rookei Reader book for early beginning readers. With only two sentences per page with only a few words each, it is very easy for young children to read along. This book teaches reading through simple, short text and repetition. The adorable African monkey is running from (almost!) every big and scary African predator there is, and by using simple adjectives like up, down, sideways, in, out, etc, children learn important directional words. With a comical plot twist in the end, this book is sure to bring a smile to not only a child, but your face as well!
