I wish to comment about Chapter 12: The Right Chemistry since I am a chemist and have taught chemistry. This chapter is full of serious errors, some of which are detailed below:
1) p. 172: The definition of 'Molecule' is incorrect because there can be more than 2 atoms and they can be from different elements. 2) p. 181: The question in the 'Moles' section is about the mass of 4 atoms but should be about the mass of 4 moles. 3) p. 181: The last but one sentence incorrectly refers to 'halogen metals' (they are nonmetals) and to alkali metals as being much less stable than the halogens. 4) p. 182: The chemical equation for the formation of water in the 'Reactions' section may occur but is not the usual one that involves molecules of hydrogen and oxygen reacting. 5) p. 184: The statement "This means that the product of reactants has to have equal proportions of the same compounds involved in the reactants." in the 'Balancing Equations' section makes no sense because it is the numbers of atoms of each element that have to be conserved. 6) p. 184: The balanced equation in step 5 and earlier equations are incorrect because the subscripts of atoms should not have been changed, only the coefficients preceding the elemental or molecular formulas. 7) p. 185: The answer to the stoichiometry question should be 289 g CuO, not 864 g; the authors got 864 g CuO because they multiply the formula weight of CuO by 3 twice. Notice step 5 which states, "One mole of 3CuO is equal to 240 g. The proper way to solve this problem is: 65 g Al x (1 mol Al/27 g Al) x (3 mol CuO/2 mol Al) x (80 g CuO/1 mol CuO) = 289 g to the nearest gram. 8) p. 185: In the 'Determining Concentration' section, molarity is defined as requiring division by volume of solvent, but it should be solution rather than solvent. 9) p. 186: In the 'Acids and Bases' section, hydrogen ions are shown with a '3' subscript, but there should be no subscript. 10) pp. 188-9: the answer to practice question 12 is supposed to be 'B' and the explanation says, "Sulfur, argon, and krypton are all metals"; the answer should be '(C) nonmetals'.
