'Rich mix': Inclusive strategies for urban regeneration

Rate this book
Through a review of existing regeneration policy, practice and research this report argues for the recognition of diversity as a strategic issue for area regeneration, focusing on race and gender. Issues of race and gender must be seen as major strategic elements within regeneration policy and practice. Gender and ethnic diversity should not be seen as a problem for regeneration policies, agencies or professionals, but as an opportunity. The 'rich mix' that results from such a perspective can release untapped resources and potential, although it is not without its difficulties and conflicts. Rich mix aims provide a scene-setting review of existing policy and practice with regard to race and gender; identify strategic approaches which can best meet the aim of promoting wider equality of opportunity; identify best practice; consider future research and policy directions. The authors conclude that sustainable regeneration cannot be met without a reorientation of policy, placing the issues of race and gender in the mainstream of area regeneration. This report is required reading for academics, policy makers and practitioners involved in area regeneration.
