الكتاب جزء من قراءتي في مجال الشبكات وهو مجال ضروري لكي انتقل إلى القراءة بشكل واسع في مجال الأمن الرقمي.
كان الكتاب ممتعا ولم يتحقق هذا إلا لأنني سبق وقد اطلعت على كورس خاص بشهادة الشبكات المقدمة من شركة كومبتيا CompTIA Network+ وهذه الشهادة تطرح معلومات ومعايير عامة تستخدم في أغلب الشبكات وأجهزتها، وسأذكر تفاصيل الكورس في الأسفل.
تطرق الكتاب في البداية إلى نموذجين للاتصالات الشبكية (السلكية واللاسلكية لا فرق) نموذج OSI Model ونموذج TCP/IP Model ، وهما نموذجان نظريان كل واحد منهما يتكون من طبقات أو درجات، يحكمان عمل مهندسي الشبكات ومبرمجي البرامج/ التطبيقات المتصلة بالانترنت أو الشبكات عموما.
ثم فصل في شرح بروتوكول Ethernet وهو من مكونات الطبقة الثانية وبروتوكول IP وهو من مكونات الطبقة الثالثة، وشرح بروتوكول ARP وبروتوكول ICMP واستعان في أثناء شروحاته بصور من البرنامج الشهير Wireshark الخاص بالتقاط وتحليل البيانات المتبادلة داخل شبكات الاتصالات، واستعان أيضًا بجداول ملونة وغير ملونة.
كما تكلم الكاتب عن معدات وأدوات الشبكات مثل: Hubs, Switches, Access Points, and Routers وذكر بعض التفاصيل الأمنية الخاصة بها السلبية والإيجابية.
استعان الكاتب كذلك في طيات الكتاب بما يسمى بـ RFC (Request For Comments) وهي مسودات وتوصيات بدأ الآباء المؤسسين للشبكات والانترنت بكتابتها منذ ستينيات القرن الماضي ولا تزال تزداد في العدد وتعدل إلى اليوم، وتعتبر هذه المكتوبات بمثابة الكتاب المقدس للشبكات والانترنت إن جاز التعبير، ومهم لكل من يريد تقديم خدمات تناسب الشبكات أن يطلع على حفنة منها خصوصا وأنها مرمزة بأرقام ومأرشفة ويمكن تحميلها كملفات نصية أو كتب إلكترونية، وكذلك يمكن الاستفادة من الاقتراحات التي يكتبها البعض اليوم فيها والتي قد تخرج في المستقبل بشكل واسع، ففيها جانب ممتع يجعلك كما لو كنت تطلع على سبق صحفي.
من إيجابيات الكتاب كونه يضع ملخصًا في نهاية كل فصل وأسئلة وأجوبة لها.
وكما هو واضح من عنوان الكتاب Core فتم التطرق إلى إلى القليل من بروتوكولات الشبكات وبأقل من ذلك تطرق إلى خصوص بروتوكلات الانترنت.
واجهت صعوبة في فهم طريقة توزيع وتقسيم عناوين الشبكات (الآي بي) وخاصة فيما يتلعق بـ Subnetting ، أما Supernetting ففهمتها بشكل سطحي لأن الكتاب لا يكفي لفهمها، وهذا المصطلحان تكمن صعوبتهما في التحويل بين الصيغة المعهودة للآي بي كـ 200.120.30.20 وبين لغة الآلة أي الصفر والواحد.
أما الكورس الذي اطلعت عليه فكان غنيًا من الناحية المعرفية والبصرية ولكن سهلا يناسب الجميع، وكان من تقديم المدرب Mike Meyers الذي له كتاب يسهل نيل الشهادة وهو Comptia Network+ All-In-One Exam Guide (Exam N10-006) فقبل أن تقرأ كتابي الذي أراجعه فعليك بالإطلاع أما على كورس في هذه الشهادة أو على كتاب مايك مايرز وإلا فستكون استفادتك منخفضة. وهذه صور من الكورس

While the Internet is hit every six months by new technologies that remodel the way we think about it, the network protocols at its very core, those that make the magic possible, are still the same since decades. And they are likely to stay. Volumes have been written about computer networks and volumes will be written. In this jungle of texts, we find Packet Guide to Core Network Protocols, a title that, instead of covering the whole ISO/OSI model from A to Z, just focuses on the most important network protocols and concepts.
Well, we all do forget things and, sometimes, get lost in the weeds: headers, hand-shakes, layers, ..help! It is true, while if you look at networking from a comfortable high perspective, everything is plain simple, once you get down to the wires and bits, things can become quite complex.
Technically speaking, Bruce’s text is easy to praise: it is very exhaustive and it provides the reader with all the details and secrets he could ever ask for about TCP/IP, ARP, Ethernet, and ICMP. Many meticulously detailed images and schemes devotedly follow the concepts being reviewed, making it easier to follow and get the picture. Each chapter comes with a summary and review Q&A, little things that add value over value.
But while the book is technically impeccable, it targets a very small niche of professionals, those that already have a solid knowledge of computer networks and just need a quick refresh. Mere mortals, instead, will get overwhelmed by the huge quantity of information given: on the one hand, those that are just interested in a quick broad overview of networking will find way too much complexity to digest. On the other hand, students, those poor things that have to learn the fields of each header, will probably need a text that covers more than Core Network Protocols does, such as Computer Networks.
So, tying it all together, a good book that targets a very selected groups of people. I don’t feel like suggesting this book, despite its quality: either go for something that covers it all or get something easier.

I was looking for a general overview of networking protocol basics. This short book gave me that and a bit more. I won't be building any networks anytime soon, but I walk away with some good knowledge of how all the parts of a network work together. The guts of how a couple protocols work didn't particularly interest me so I scanned those sections. Loved the review questions & activities at the end of each chapter.

I took this book to get basic understanding how network is working. To get basic concepts of protocols, devices and differences between layers.
Just finished the book and I'm very happy about it. It is short, but very concentrated. Easy to read but a lot of information is included. I believe there are only basic principles included and for network-related-person it might look too plain. But to get strong basic knowledge this book is just perfect.
