Lily Running Doe of family of witches, mute, hoping - at age of 25 when comes into power - will become a Songbird, able to control with her voice; parents killed, and as oldest has worked hard to keep her sisters safe, together, healthy - primarily taking housekeeping jobs; accepts one with Jeffrey Carter -
Isadora - the house demon/ghost; she was a powerful witch in her day, buried alive in the basement, and now haunts the house; wants a soul so as to be resurrected; gets Jeffrey to trade his soul for guarantee success in the music world - he has had 10 years of fame, and when didn't return to house, she caused an accident that scarred the side of his face...
He has one month left until his soul is due... returns to the house, and hires Lily to clean the house... he feels comfortable with her... she is not scared off by the house (she senses its evil)... they become lovers... and she fights for him, destroying Isadora with her voice... ahhhh
