What's the difference between offense and defense—a linebacker and a tight end? What's a first down? and Why are teams penalized for holding and illegal motion? These are some of the fundamental questions covered in this insightful reference to the game of football. Written primarily for women who lack knowledge of the sport, this user-friendly and often humorous guide takes a look at the origin of football and describes the rules of the game, the role of each position, the responsibilities of officials, how statistics are kept, and the strategies behind plays. An overview of each team in the NFL is provided along with information on the college football conferences, a comprehensive glossary of football terminology, and a trivia section to enhance understanding and enjoyment of the game.
I know football. I picked up this book to see what I might be able to learn from it. There were some things I did learn.
However, the history section is long and boring. I skipped most of it. There are some things repeated too often that aren't really worth saying more than once. And the book doesn't fully explain some things. (The concept of first downs, for example, isn't explained well. I know how they work and it confused me.)
It could be very helpful to someone who really wants the low down on football, just make sure to have a friend who knows football nearby to explain the tricky parts.
