"Captain" Reid wrote many adventure novels akin to those written by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a great admirer of Lord Byron. These novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed settings: the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica.

A fine adventure

This book was originally released in 1850. Many of the terms used are quite archaic and in the Boer of South Africa language. The words which flora and fauna are described was foreign to me and I was constantly looking up to see what animal was being described. For instance camelopard is a giraffe. The only other thing to keep in mind is this is fiction. Not all narrative is believable. Then again how much of the crap put out by Hollywood is believable? The entertainment value is there and gives you a glimpse into an archaic writing style that is no longer seen.
