He was also the secretary general of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) from 1981 to 1987.
As an academic Peter Glotz was the director of the Ludwig Maximilians University, the founding director of the University of Erfurt and professor for communication sciences, and later professor for media and society at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.
