Len Beadell's classic account of the building of the famous Gunbarrel Highway across Central Australia in which he recounts in his own colourful style the outstanding events of its construction.
I have all of Beadell's books, back in Western Australia and it is frustrating borrowing them from the library. Beating about the Bush is a tale of all the unfortunate things that occurred whilst trying to construct a road across the desert from Papanya west of Alice Springs to Jupiter Well in the Great Sandy Desert. One can sympathise with the road builders when their grader broke down and had to be towed by the bulldozer 800 kilometres back to civilization at three kilometres an hour. Then to add to the discomforture of the road builders, their ration truck caught fire and melted. Wildlife for dinner tonight if you can find any
I am new to goodreads, and I am going back and rate some of my favorite books. I was delighted to be able to add this book, and find that someone else loved it as well.
