Rate this book
This book offers the first complete monograph on the art of Miquel Barcelo, whose increasing international recognition places him alongside fellow Spaniards filmmaker Almodovar and novelist Javier Maria. Barcelo's rich artistic vision is drawn from his extensive travels in Africa and along the Mediterranean, and although his mystical, ritualistic use of symbol and figuration place him alongside the transavantgardia and neo-expressionism of the 1980s, his is an art that is truly iconoclastic. At the center of his work is elemental matter -- part desert, part sea -- and his thick use of paint, his natural effects (as in termite holes), and his sculptures, all seem created from the inside out.
