Written for young girls 8-12, this brand-new series combines the writings of the Kelly girls with journal/activity elements in an engaging, exciting companion book to every girl's walk with God. Each book in the series includes scriptures, fun facts, journal writings, and fun personal quizzes. Girls will be able to express their deepest thoughts and feelings, as well as share everything from their favorite ice cream to the things that make them cry. In this first book, it's all about the reader. Finding out who you are can be a fun process that will take you a lifetime-and this book gets girls started out in style! A self-guided tour through every area of a girl's inner life, this book encourages girls to find the answers to small questions (What's your favorite color? Your favorite ice cream flavor?, etc.) as well as large ones (What makes you sad? What makes you angry?) A section on dreams and special gifts will also be included. All little girls have dreams of what they want to be when they grow up, and this book will help them discover which of the special gifts talked about in the Bible they have been given. With activities ranging from word searches, create-your-own story fill-in-the-blanks, true/false questions, journaling space, a companion web site, fun facts, and scriptures, this first volume in the HOT CHOCOLATE WITH GOD series promises hours of fun and self-discovery!
Camryn Kelly is the youngest daughter of Jill Kelly and her husband, retired Buffalo Bills Quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly. She has a passion for writing and sharing her childlike faith in Jesus.
This is a cute, fun book for girls. I gave this to my 9 year old daughter - ok, she saw it and grabbed it from me and ran off with it if you want to know the truth. I had told her I thought she would like it and she was gone with it. The book has lots of questions to answer and word finds and places to put photos and tips and advice and a website to go with it. Becca has enjoyed filling it out with pens that have glittery ink and I have enjoyed that some of the questions are worded so that she has to ask me to answer them with her. We like the "hallelujah test" of whether a shirt is long enough - put your hands in the air and shout hallelujah, but Becca is tall and long waisted and she often fails that test. She likes the website too and is enjoying reading and filling out the book. This is not a novel or story, but a book full of questionaires, and short bits of info. Becca is not through filling it out, and that is fine. I like that it is kind of like a diary and she enjoys filling it out a little bit at a time. I highly recommend the book and think it is well done and fun for girls.
I don't remember being 11 years old, except that I was a full-blown bookworm (and New Kids on the Block fan) by then. It was all about being a girl, having crushes, writing notes to girlfriends in between classes, and swapping Sweet Valley High books.
Hot Chocolate with God, written by eleven-year-old Camryn Kelly with the help of her mom and older sister, is an ideal gift for young girls. It's targeting middle school readers, but I think this is a better fit for younger girls.
It's an activity book that's a lot like a slumbook (or slam book?), interspersed with Camryn's own personal stories and answers. It's also meant to be interactive--the website is full of video clips and other stuff to click on.
By the end of it, the reader has basically hung out with Camryn and become fast friends. More importantly, the book teaches the value of finding joy in who you are simply because God made you you. At a stage when competition among girls can be fierce and there is a great pressure to conform and fit in, this book is a good reminder for young girls to keep their focus on Christ.
Hot Chocolate with God: Just Me and Who God Created Me to Be by Camryn Kelly is a very interesting and creative book to read. I appreciate how it has not only scripture and insights into those scriptures, but the book is very interactive, wanting the reader to pause, reflect and JOIN in by journaling what their feelings are on certain matters, some serious, some self discovery, some are questions about your likes and dislikes. Hot Chocolate with God also has several different activities, such as word searches, Fill in the blanks, etc. This book is a great one to recommend to young ladies, even "tweens" as it helps you see your uniqueness not as a weirdness but as a God given and God blessed design.
