Saved $4 because I borrowed from Mandi.

This book was recommended and lent to me by my 9-year-old niece. What a hoot! This fun chapter book is a must-read for the early-grade reader. The chapters are short, the illustrations are cute, and the story is so fun!

The title pretty much tells all you need to know about the premise of this story. There's plenty of humor, adventure, and suspense in the story. The humor is dry because, although we know the story is a bit wacky, it's told as though it is completely serious. This teaches your child the long lost art of wit--a valuable commodity.

Also, there are several well known sayings in the book, correctly attributed to their original author (Ben Frainklin, etc.) And there are many random enjoyable facts--just the sort of thing children pick up in books. The emphasis on learning and the value of school is presented to the reader in such a way they have no idea that learning is being promoted.

Finally, the book has a classic feel. There is no technology to date the story, so we aren't left pigeon-holed into a particular era. The illustrations leave us with a feel of a setting in the 1950s or 60s, but it could honestly fall at any time frame.

My only complaint with this book: It's published by a small publishing house and hasn't had much exposure. The good news? You can get a copy of this book from Amazon for almost free, paying only for the shipping. Add this to your young reader's library. They'll love it. (And then go steal it off their bookshelf and spend an hour or so reading it yourself. You'll like it too.)

FANTASTIC READ!!! This book was given to me by a good friend along with a stuffed dog. When a book comes with a main character in stuffed animal form one can only conclude: go home, find a comfy spot, possibly a hot cocoa in hand and enjoy. This book is the equivalent of giving a child a deliciously long three layers banana split boat with three types of ice cream floating in the boat, topped with cool whip, drizzled with caramel not chocolate and then topped with a very large ripe red cherry. The stuffed dog was the spoon given to help satisfy the sweet tooth. I can't wait to read this book to the children in the library. When they see the dog, they are going to giggle while their eyes light up with joy. David Melton, may I have some more please?

This book was hilarious! I read it to my niece and we both enjoyed it a lot. My advice--take it for the hilarity that it is, and don't take it seriously. This will help you enjoy it the most. Great book to read to a child or for a child to read! We loved it!
