Το τελείωσα χτες το βράδυ. Το είχα ξεκινήσει Σεπτέμβριο, αλλά μετά τις 50 πρώτες σελίδες ασχολήθηκα με άλλα πράγματα και το άφησα.

Για μένα κάθε βιβλίο αποτελείται από πέντε βασικά στοιχεία: ιδέα, χαρακτήρες, πλοκή, γραφή, τεχνική. Το Forge of Stones παίρνει:

-στην ιδέα 18/20, γιατί δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα πρωτότυπη, αλλά καταφέρνει να φαίνεται φρέσκια,

- στους χαρακτήρες 18/20, γιατί καταφέρνει να τους κάνει ξεχωριστούς μέσα στο κεφάλι μου, να έχει ο καθένας την υπόστασή του (αν και όχι τη δική του προσωπική φωνή, εκτός από δύο χαρακτήρες που τείνουν προς το γραφικό)

τον Pilgrim και τον Prosops

- στην πλοκή 15/20, γιατί θα μπορούσε να την κάνει λίγο πιο σφιχτή κατά τη γνώμη μου

- στη γραφή δε θα βάλω βαθμό, πρώτον γιατί τα αγγλικά δεν είναι η μητρική μου γλώσσα, δεύτερον γιατί ακόμη κι έτσι κατάφερα να βρω μικροπροβληματάκια, τρίτον γιατί ήταν φανερά πομπώδης και υπερβολικά φανταχτερή και τέταρτον γιατί, πώς να το κάνουμε, τα αποσιωπητικά είναι πάντα και σε όλες τις γλώσσες τρεις τελείες κι όχι δύο.

- και στην τεχνική θα βάλω κάτω από τη βάση. Πολύ κάτω από τη βάση.

Το βιβλίο είναι το χαρακτηριστικότερο παράδειγμα του πώς τέσσερα καλά μέρη στα πέντε (ιδέα, χαρακτήρες, πλοκή, γραφή) δεν είναι ικανά να εξισορροπήσουν το ένα κακό μέρος. Η τεχνική που επιλέγει ο Καλαμπάκας για την αφήγηση είναι η εξής. Ξεκινάει ένα κεφάλαιο. Ο ήρωας από του οποίου την ΟΓ βλέπουμε το κεφάλαιο βρίσκεται κάπου, στο οποίο αυτό κάπου ο ήρωας περιφέρεται, σκέφτεται και αγωνιά/κάνει υπολογισμούς. Αυτό κρατάει για τουλάχιστον 10-20 σελίδες κάθε φορά. Κι ύστερα κάτι γίνεται για περίπου 5 σελίδες και το κεφάλαιο τελειώνει.

Επιπλέον, όλη η αρχική διαδικασία της ομφαλοσκόπησης μπορεί να περιλαμβάνει δύο και τρεις φορές το ίδιο θέμα, εντός των 10-20 σελίδων του συγκεκριμένου κεφαλαίου. Η Σίλια ανησυχεί για τον άντρα της. Θυμάται πόσο ο άντρας την την αγαπούσε. Πηγαίνει στην κουζίνα να πιει νερό. Θυμάται με πόση τρυφερότητα την αγαπούσε ο άντρας της. Και πάει λέγοντας.

Η επιλογή αυτής της τεχνικής αφήγησης, και λυπάμαι πάρα πολύ που το λέω, κατέστρεψε μια ωραία ιδέα, μερικούς πολύ ενδιαφέροντες χαρακτήρες, μια πλοκή που αγγίζει την μοντέρνα αντίληψη περί πλοκής και μια γλώσσα, που με το χέρι στην καρδιά, με έμαθε πάρα πολλές καινούργιες λέξεις. Αλλά με αυτό το ρυθμό αφήγησης, δε θα ντραπώ να πω ότι παρακαλούσε κάποια στιγμή να τελειώσει. Κουράστηκα, δεν είχα περισσότερες αντοχές.

Editing Urgently Required

I tried to get through this book, but could only make it about a quarter of the way before I gave up. This has to be one of the worst books I have ever tried to read. The English sentence structure is appalling. And the countless misspellings were beyond belief! Every couple of sentences, I wanted to correct this published work. I will never buy another of this author's "books". Just terrible.

First time reviewing a book,but I'll give it a try.(if God is in a good mood,the writer won't ran me over with his car afterwards).
Forge of Stones is an easy to read,refreshing fantasy/adventure/science fiction story.Readers will not find it hard to understand the writer,even when they read the "prophet" monologues,since he keeps his language simple and clear.His humorous "splashes", particularly or perhaps even solely coming from Ron,the robot, are welcomed since they are few and they are meant to show the reader snatches of the robot's strange personality. As for his story and characters;Hilderich is your usual unwilling protagonist as he truly didn't start his day wishing to be in any kind of adventure;Ron the robot I personally loved;Amonas is a tragic figure and Celia has more than meets the eye in her,she could surprise us more than any other character in the book should the writer decide to tell us more about his world in a second book.
I would recommend Forge of Stones to those others out there that have always wanted to read science fiction/fantasy/adventure type of books but are deep inside them sick of the long,weird,totally incomprehensible "scientific" references other writers choose to incorporate in their stories but no one really understands and to those who like stories with a twist and unpredictable endings.You will love it.

The forge of stones is not an easy read. It’s long and at times unnecessarily over descriptive, the story has a variety of characters, that are seemingly unconnected and the writer jumps from place to place.
However, I still really enjoyed this fantasy, science fiction meets total recall (Schwarzenegger). It really intrigued me and I felt I wanted to finish it. The character were well written and I felt their pain and their hope. I also felt their frustration and inability to affect the ongoing war.
I do feel the writer did himself a disservice by not making more of the battle for power in Pyr, this could have been far less descriptive and more driven. The story would have been more effective if it had been a little shorter.
But when all said I liked it.

It was a moderate read over all with a complex social structure and the author's own version of the holly inquisition that brings a feeling of the old being mixed with the fantasy element.
The only negative part of the book in my opinion was that it should contain a little more action in order to be capable of holding the reader's interest more in tense and making it more enjoyable.

Could not finish this one. Got 15% of the way through and gave up. Complex yet boring. The florid writing style is very heavy on description and light on dialogue/action. This author needed an editor.
