Holiday charm abounds in this satisfying story featuring three irresistibly appealing snowmen who discover that ""the more, the merrier"" is true when it comes to Christmas! It is Christmas Eve. Inside the church, the restaurant, and the houses, everyone is celebrating. But outside, in the deserted street, three snowmen shiver in the cold, dark night. They long to join in the festivities, but as everyone knows, snowmen melt indoors. Suddenly a door flies open, and two children come rushing out. Soon they are joined by other children. Working together, they create a wonderful surprise for the lonely snowmen -- the gift of a truly merry Christmas.
Christmas for the Snowmen was enjoyable, but it didn't wow me.
Although I certainly understand how a snowman could be too warm, I don't exactly understand how one could be too cold. . . but that's where the story begins. I'm pretty sure even the youngest would know that. The Christmas parts made more sense and the story should have developed a better vehicle for getting there than snowmen freezing.
The illustrations of Christmas for the Snowmen are charming.
This story follows three snowman on a mission to (strangely enough) escape the bitter cold on Christmas Eve. An awkward twist from the usual snowman plot to avoid warmth, this situation leaves the reader feeling . . . bizarre. Should I want the snowman to find a warm place? The answer is affirmed as "no" when the snowmen attempt to dine in a warm restaurant, only to find that they melt. Thus, their predicament seems to possess no solution. As one snowman declared: "This is terrible . . . we're miserable. It's so cold and lonely out here, but inside, where everyone else is celebrating, it's too warm for us." Thankfully, the plot seems to shift when several children notice these three snowmen and decide to build them friends. Soon the street is filled with snowmen, and the story concludes with a Christmas Eve celebration.
Though this story strayed a little too far from reason and seemed to lack the "feel" of Christmas, it also presented several entertaining and creative scenes. Filled with fun illustrations and a happy ending, there is still an element to be enjoyed.
This book was absolutely precious. I love the idea of there being families of snowmen, women and kids who celebrate too. It was such a great story. I'm grateful we had it and got to read it with the kids. They loved it.
