Oh! Great

Oh! great, whose real name is Ito Ōgure (大暮維人 Ōgure Ito) is a Japanese manga artist most recognized for the manga series Tenjho Tenge and Air Gear. In 2006, he received the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen for Air Gear. Apart from working with manga, he designed some of the alternate character outfits in the PlayStation 2 version of Namco's 3D fighting game Tekken 5, and a guest character in Soul Calibur IV named Ashlotte.

His pseudonym "Oh! great" is a play on words. His pen name, written in Japanese order, is "Ōgure Ito", which is pronounced similarly to and can be romanized the same as the Japanese rendering of the English words "Oh great," ōgurēto. Furthermore, "Oh" can mean "king" in Japanese, making it possible to read the name as "the great king".

Maya Natsume and Mitsuomi Takanahashi
*Edit* Reread review added at the bottom.

Holy fucking shit. Volume 7 was the best volume. 5/5. So intense. Fuck.

I've shipped Mitsuomi and Maya so hard ever since volume 5 but still nothing has happened with them and at this point it seems like nothing ever will. Why the heck were people in the future saying that they used to be dating???
Disappointed gif
But yenno other than that it was fuckin hype as hell. The story and fights and art and everything was so nice and juicy.

But then volume 7 wraps up the backstory arc and we go back to our main characters... And honestly.....

Disappointed gif ... Again.

At this point, after that awesome arc, I like those guys way more than the actual main cast. This whole manga should have just been that backstory arc and it would have been a 5/5 series just for that last volume alone.

But hope is not lost, I'm sure in due time I'll come to re-connect with the main cast again. Though I'm still salty about Takanahashi's character being ruined. I was going to specify that I was talking about the younger brother, but it's actually kind of both of them.

Maya Natsume and Mitsuomi Takanahashi

I liked this volume a good deal, god damn it!!!!!!!!!!!! The whole double works, as in BOTH volumes 7 AND 8. I handled the transition out of the flashback arc and back into the main story a lot smoother this second time around, and I loved it from start to finish. The first time I read this, volume 7 was my favourite of the bunch, but this time around I think I disagree. Volumes 5 and 6 were just such a blast to read a second time that I didn't think that volume 7 was really any better. Volume 7 is when Shin corrupts wholesome Mitsuomi and shows the beginning of his downfall, so I didn't enjoy it as much, even though that's what made me enjoy it more the first time. Volume 8 ends right before the series starts going into lots of annoying/useless/pointless fighting arcs, aka at the perfect point in order to finish off the flashback arc on a high note.

These are some quotes that stuck out a lot to me that I somehow didn't notice during my first read:
"My life as a martial artist died at that moment... And now... He's trying to take away the one person I love more than anyone!?" Mitsuomi, pg 173

SORRY THAT'S JUST THE SOUND OF ME SOBBING HYSTERICALLY IN THE BACKGROUND BRB. I'm not even joking when I say that I actually teared up a teeny tiny bit when I read that. It's Mitsuomi literally admitting that he loves Maya!!!!!!!!! MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE!!!!!!!! Oh my god I ship this so hard. It's so sad how he went kind of berserk and that Maya hates him now. It's also super sad how he words Shin's damage as the death of his martial arts (which is essentially the death of himself, as martial arts=life).

"Why on earth was I hesitating so much? I spent all my time staring at the ground... Even though the sky is so big and beautiful." Aya, pgs 188-189
A really cute and relatable quote that also shows some (much needed) growth from Aya!!

This volume as a whole--even the end that's no longer the flashback arc--was such a nice read. Still a 4 star rating though, as compared to the previous two volumes which I rated 5 stars as a whole.

Synopsis:

Mitsuomi and Maya are now rivals, but once they were close friends. Their lives were changed forever because of one person: Shin Natsume, Maya’s older brother and Mitsuomi’s mentor. Inheritor of the Dragon Eyes and leader of the Supreme Warrior Faction, the charismatic Shin also bears dark and terrible secrets. Struggling under the burden of the immense power he possesses, and manipulated by those who seek to use that power, Shin begins to lose control. Maya and Mitsuomi each have their own ideas for how to deal with his increasingly erratic behavior, but it’s up to Bunshichi to really beat some sense into him!

My Thoughts:

This volume brings us to the conclusion of the story that set all of this in motion and the beginning of something new. I hate the way everything went down between Shin, Maya and Mitsuomi back then. If everyone had just did maybe one thing differently, maybe Shin wouldn't have had to die like that and Maya and Mitsuomi wouldn't be enemies. Neither would Mitsuomi basically be a dead man walking. Dogen Takayanagi is basically the worst offender of all. I'm not saying that Shin was a saint, he was pretty psycho. Yet, he wasn't always like that. The Dragon Eyes was too much for him and it was all handled poorly from the start. Dogen wanted to avenge his best friend's death, but he shouldn't have done it the way that he did. In the end, it backfired on him, anyway. For Mitsuomi, power is everything. He still has a soft spot for Maya, but he would still take her out for his goal. Just what does he really want to achieve, anyway?

All of the Juken Club members know what they're up against now, at least. They also know why Maya is fighting. Bob and Soichirou seem to have gained real respect for her now. I'm glad. There's plenty Maya could have done differently to save Shin back then, but she wasn't the only one that screwed up. She's definitely deserving of respect.

It's time for the Juken Club members to get serious about their training. The Imperial Tournament prelims are coming up and the club members need to be strong if they're going to face the Executive Council in the final round. There's a long road ahead of them, but I know they can do it.

I hope Aya has settled her issues with Maya. She seems to have, but you don't get over unrequited love so easily. Masataka is in the same boat, but even worse. At least Soichirou knows how Aya feels about him. Aya has no idea Masataka is even into her. I hope those two get to be happy. Still, Soichirou loves Maya, but how does she feel about him? She still seems to have feelings for Mitsuomi. Such complicated love lives these guys have. Except for Bob and Chiaki.
