Finn Dante is the youngest son of the king of Shale. Powerless and superfluous, he craves both his father's approval and a quiet life. When he's sent to find a long lost cousin he knows he's not going to achieve either. His oldest brother Rain, heir to the kingdom and Finn's hero since boyhood, launches a rebellion, an ancient enemy is about to rise and - at the periphery of Finn's vision - the perfect woman beckons to him. Her price? Nothing less than his soul. Tamsin Mira is the granddaughter of an exile, determined to live her life on her own terms. But events conspire to draw her back into the intrigue of the court of Shale. When her children vanish and an old lover resurfaces with a brand new agenda, she makes a decision that is destined to affect more than just her life. Finn offers her refuge, but for Tamsin, love alone is never going to be enough. She sets out to do the impossible - to wrest her birthright from the woman who holds it, and the attainted Prince of Shale who stands behind her.

Finn and Tamsin – outsiders raised in the same family, attracted by love but repelled by destiny. Tamsin tries to live the life of a commoner and to forget the man who fathered her first child: the step-brother of Finn and who is the heir to the kingdom of Shale, but whose soul is now controlled by a woman with dark magic. Tamsin fights to reclaim a realm that her grandmother fled from, but will her efforts to claim the crown and bring peace to her land forever drive away Finn, the man she truly loves? Lives will be lost, ancient secrets will be uncovered and loyalties will be tested.

K. L. Clark has created an extraordinary world in Dissolution. What is most unique is that it is a fantastical world with recognizable elements of our reality that you won’t see in other fantasy novels – coffee and fried chicken and guns – yet it is blended with a world of sorcery and kingdoms. The story is told from alternate points-of-view of our ‘Bella and Edward’ star-crossed protagonists, so you can appreciate their turmoils and their victories from their own perspective. It is populated by plenty of secondary characters to keep the story interesting. The story never lags, as each turn of the page offers a new and dynamic development. It promises to kick off a very thrilling epic series, and I am eager to read further adventures!

This is a wonderful book by a new author. The characters are well formed and the story is complex and innovative. If you like the Amber books you will love this book. It is a fantasy novel with a difference. It combines different lands, some of which live with horse, sword and magic but they are connected to lands that are modern with motorcars and tv etc. The way Karen Clark brings these seemingly conflicting notions together and turns it all into a story that makes you think while enjoying a great read is wonderful and exciting. It is available on Amazon and Lulu and I would recommend it to anyone who loves books which take you somewhere where you can believe that something very different can and does exist.
