R. David Fulcher returns to the realm of the macabre, the strange and the fantastic with his new collection of short stories, The Cemetery of Hearts. Using his signature style of intense imagery and eerie atmosphere, he pens tales that take readers to an ancient planetoid, the pungent sewer, all-American small towns and a medieval city. Once again, his vivid characters leap from the stories into the minds of the readers as their tortured tales play out on the page.
Dear future readers, this book offers an unusual reading experience. Enter the worlds, different planets and different times to get an image of the author's mind richness. Since it's a collection, you can find your favourite genre within the pages. If it's not your first book from Mr Fulcher, you can expect the same level of anticipation and soul-ripping action, balanced grime/blood sceneries, and chill as in his other books. Yet, something is different. The morals and deeper thoughts are masterfully thrown in front of your eyes. Altogether with the main character, you will ask yourself: "How would I react? What would I do, being in their situation?" The first story (Spectra's masterpiece) will introduce you to the world of art where nothing is like it seems. Eyes can be tricked easily, and words can be lies itself. Thin layer between fantasy and reality disappears in a sigh of passion. Another interesting shortie I picked out of them all; which earns my heart and buried it deeply underneath the pleasure of being--- SPOILER; it's called SLOW FALLS THE SUMMER RAIN. In this brilliant piece of art, you will find a recipe on how to win a competition for the greenest garden, and to get rid of neighbour in one. Two in one! And the price is just your soul and--- SPOILER! The third story which earned my attention and possible nightmares was called Extra! Extra! Indeed, it's an extra story with the somehow "visionary" plot twist: Hungry stones don't like to be messed up with. For this story fits nicely an old saying: "Curiosity killed the..." Another spoiler, sorry. Although, it worth a shot. Once again, awesome collection of short stories full of blood, grim, dark-winged creatures, and powerful intercourse (in case your teeth are sharpened enough). Recommended for everyone in love with short stories and little bit (a huuge) fear in your heart.
4.5 Stars. This is the sci fi of my youth, of IF magazine and Judith Merrill collations. This is a Bradbury-ish collection of Summer Wine and Martian Chronicles. This is a book to get lost in.
