What started as a writing exercise exploded into an obsession, grew into a website and then took over and successfully ran a small chain of English-themed catapult restaurants for a number of years.
Or something like that.
It's Flash Fiction at its finest. Dark, happy, weird ... brief little adventures into another place.
Come read something short and exciting - like a love letter tattooed on a Smurf.
This is a quick read of one hundred two sentence stories. It's hilarious, witty, and flat-out brilliant. Sometimes the punch-line is delivered first in the title--and sometimes it's as you stare at that second sentence.
One of my favorites is:
Leader
As a joke I took them to see the cat when they said "take us to your leader."
The cat received them with good graces, had some kind of long talk with them and then they left rather quickly.

The one caveat I have with this "book" which cost it a star is that there was some author intrusion in a few of the "stories" where the author sounded disgruntled with the publishing world. Those stories felt out of place and in such a short medium should have been swapped out with others in my opinion. It wasn't in the second installment A Puppet Whisperer.
For those sensitive to profanity, this may not be the book for you. While hilarious, it definitely has a sharp edge to the humor...which is just how I like it.
Highly recommended to finish off a long day where you need a good laugh.
I don't quite know how I stumbled across Mathew Ferguson's collection, but I'm glad that I did. His flash fiction comes with a kick: his two-sentence stories are a landscape of humor, longing, girls and time-travel.
Much to my happiness, the impact of these stories accumulates. By themselves, the flash fiction is good--but they become fantastic when the shape of their emotional work becomes apparent. Let the tone of the introduction guide you. This book is all about discontinuity. Funny one minute, heartbreaking the next.
If you are a fan of flash fiction, or poetry, give this book a try!
I adored this collection of flash fiction! The style and tone are always spot on with a sense of humour which had me giggling constantly. I enjoyed the fact that there was a range of themes, subject matter and genres. This has inspired me to try writing some of my own flash fiction.
