Great Source book - and I want most of the Jewelry Here!

I read this book as a source book, specifically for a novel I wrote, in which one of the main characters gives away most of his jewelry, including one piece of pure silver that is nearly priceless. So, what the heck did they wear? This book gives answers and illustrations.

A good example of what this book supplies is the photograph of an armlet designed to be worn on the upper arm. Those pieces had a flat extension of gold (or whatever metal) extending up toward the armpit, which helped to anchor the piece. Since most of us nowadays don't wear such pieces, it's good to know, and I was able to describe it.

Source books like this one are very valuable for research, since they satisfy the need for verbal information and for visual information. This book makes a splendid coffee table book, too, and the author's style is engaging and interesting.

(There's a long string of large lapis beads that I absolutely covet...)

Author Carol Andrews not only shows us jewelry from 4000 years of Egypt, but shares fascinating observations and insights. For example she includes line drawings of tomb paintings with plenty of explanation what we are seeing. Some are funny, as with the two gold workers.

Surprisingly the best chapters were those on materials and techniques. They were very interesting because she told us why they used each material, its source and what that told us about the society, and how they used it, the symbolism. I expected the text to be dry but it was actually more interesting than the pictures!
Highly recommended.

The photos in this book are wonderful! However, there is no links between the photos and the written descriptions of those photos in this book. Much space is given to descriptions of tomb paintings and jewelry not photographed in this book.

I am disappointed in the disconnect between the descriptions given of the items photographed and the actual photos. Most books of this type have plate numbers next to the photos which are referenced in the text. Not this book.

So, read the text if you wish, but take time to really look at the photos. The photos are worth the price of the book.
