This story featured a Dom/switch/sub relationship. There were fuzzy personal boundaries between client/rentboy, on the job/off the job, and paid/free. Unfortunately, there wasn't equal emotional involvement all the way around. The menage ended up feeling weak.
What can I say, I like Ms. Crow's style but I feel that here she's telling a tale too complex for being so short. If the relationship of the author and her book would be a D/s one than Kriby Crow is one of those fake doms Ethan complains about. Every time the story wants to grow and thrive she reins it in and cuts it short. Come to think that way she treats her story as Ethan is treating Kit.
So why do I love this book. Mostly I've been avoiding BDSM and such for awhile, b/c I'm so burned out on it, it's the kind of genre/sub-genre authors grab onto for easy money or some such, and they don't do the research or anything, they just clone each other. But I enjoy Kirby Crow's work and I was looking for something that was not 400 pages, so I grabbed it.
My first favorite part is that there is no shaming or angsting or other tiresome bullshit about them being sex workers. No jealous hissy fits and how they should give it up if they really love Vincent or each other.
My second favorite part is the dynamics. You've got three guys, three different ages/stages of life, three very different ways of handling the world. They balance beautifully, in a very realistic way. Vincent is a man in charge, and I like it's not spelled out how he got that way. So many authors would have filled this story with so much unnecessary backstory and such, and while that can be lovely and necessary, it isn't necessary here, Vincent works exactly as he is.
Then you've got Ethan, man in the middle, used to existing on the surface and not going too deep because that's how he's learned to get by. When he finally gets into a situation that requires depth, he starts to fall apart, his life starts to go, and he has to figure that shit out before he loses everything.
And of course Kit, our pretty pretty brat, the young boy who is probably as centered as Vincent in his own way, but young and bratty and lacking Vincent's experience.
This book also was not the other end of the BDSM romance spectrum, which is lecture porn, I hate that crap. This book knew what it was talking about without treating me like I was a dumbass twit attending BDSM 101.
And the smut was hot like fire, but that goes without saying with Kirby Crow.
Love this book, love this author. If you want a solid, short threesome BDSM story, you can't go wrong with this one.
3.5 Stars - I really liked the premise of this story, even more so as it played out and the dynamics were shown.
Ethan and Kit are bffs with benefits and rent boys who apparently cater to the BDSM clientele on a predominantly gay island resort. It is intimated that they are in the BDSM scene, though Kit seemed a bit surprised when he walked in on Ethan and Vincent, one of Ethan’s newest clients.
Ethan and Vincent see more and more of each other, with Ethan subbing for Vincent. Kit is a bit jealous but is quickly quieted after Vincent pulls him into their sessions. Things are a bit confusing at first, but the rules are quickly set where Ethan/Kit and Vincent are concerned and who is allowed to do what with whom.
Ethan has always been somewhat of a dom to Kit, but he never actually fulfills the role, causing Kit to act out in various ways, though Ethan doesn’t make the connection. Vincent does, however, and makes the call to be the dom Kit needs until Ethan is willing and able. So, this is a precarious threesome, that’s not quite a menage. As Kit pulls away (or is pulled away by Vincent, as his dom and acting in his best interests), Ethan must take a much closer look at things and decide what he truly wants.
There are quite a few misunderstandings in this story, but it moves along at a good clip, skipping time here and there to move things ahead. Unfortunately, I think it leaves out some important elements by doing so. I never really got a feel for the surroundings or the characters which left me with so many questions. So, while I enjoyed what we did get, I felt this would have been so much better if it were a bit more involved, with a little more depth here and there. All in all, it was a nice afternoon quickie.
