I first read this when it was initially published in 1986 and enjoyed it. I was a teen then, so I decided to go back to it and see how it holds up under my now more knowledgeable film eye.
I am pleased to say I enjoyed it even more this time around.
McCarty has a love of film, and a lot of what he writes in this book has a personal slant to it. That makes it far more relatable than a lot of film books. His examinations of "psychos" throughout film and made-for-television-films history is refreshing and nuanced. And, most importantly, it reminded me of some films I had forgotten about.
