Indeed, if you’re ever at a Rotherham United match (I know, what are the chances?) and you spot a small blonde with a large ‘London Millers’ flag, that’ll be me.
For twenty years, I worked on the UK edition of Forum magazine, for most of those years as editor. In that time, I built up the fiction side of the magazine, and was responsible for publishing the first stories by lots of now well-known and established erotic authors – most notably Portia da Costa and Lindsay Gordon, who was until recently Black Lace’s series editor.
However, I love writing even more than I love editing, and I’ve finally taken the plunge to write full-time. I’ve had stories published by Black Lace, Xcite Books, Cleis Press, Circlet Press, Mammoth, Ravenous Romance, Total-e-bound and more, and my collection of three gay erotic novellas, Wild Rides, will be coming out as a print book from Xcite in 2012. And I’m happy in my work…

Fun, easy to read story about an actor who discovers a love of a bit of kink. Jamie is an actor who isn’t too worried about telling the exact truth – when in need of a new role to play, at least. His little ‘white lie’ about being able to ride a horse gets him into trouble, but this quickly turns out to be all for the best when Andrej, the guy in charge of the horses, takes charge of Jamie as well. While Jamie likes being the submissive partner, even learns to appreciate the odd spanking, he isn't a true submissive. He is very cute and adorably wide-eyed as he lets Andrej teach him about some of the more kinky aspects of sex.
If you like a short story with a bit of hot sex, this is just right for you.

Jamie Desmond is a young actor. Just as realizes his friends with benefits relationship leaves much to be desired, he lands a role in a movie that takes him away from his day to day existence. Jamie’s good fortune, however, is based on a little white lie. He’s never ridden a horse and it’s only a matter of time before his lie is uncovered. Andrej, the horse master on the film, quickly recognizes Jamie’s deception but that’s not all. He sees within Jamie a need to submit and while training him to ride, instructs him in submission and embracing his need for BDSM.
Ridden Hard is Jamie’s journey. It reads like a journal so the dual plot lines of Jamie’s life as an actor and on the movie set intertwine with his relationship with Andrej. The earlier scenes with Jamie and Fin (his friend with benefits) was a good contrast to the relationship Jamie develops with Andrej later. Those opening scenes go a long way to explain Jamie’s reaction to Andrej and his ready acceptance of the “training” Andrej puts him through. What I didn’t like was the intrusiveness of the side story – Jamie’s acting world, especially when it goes into detail of an actor’s life. It does fit into the journal aspect of the story, but it also slows the story down. I really wanted to see more of Andrej and Jamie together. Though that aspect of Ms. Coldwell’s tale didn’t appeal to me, I still liked the story and I bought into the ending.

Cover - the cowboy look, which only applies in the sense that there's some horseback riding involved in the story.
MC's - Jamie, a movie actor, story told from his 3rd person POV. Andrej, a Czech horse handler.
This was a little story that wanted to be a lot more, and if it had been longer maybe it would have been. Jamie gets a job in an Arthurian movie because he lies about being able to ride a horse. When they get to the Czech Republic the stable master has him figured out and agrees to teach him. Turns out Andrej is a Dom, and Jamie didn't know it before but he's a sub. He takes to Andrej's commands (take off all your clothes and get on the horse) like a cat to the internet.
The sexual aspect of the relationship moves along at a good clip, with Jamie submitting to Andrej in various ways - getting naked on command, agreeing to submit, tied down and beaten with a crop, flogged in the presence of another man, boot licking, etc. There's no mention of a safe word; it's all more along the lines of "you'll take what punishment I decide to give." And Jamie learns to ride a horse.
He also acts in the movie, and we get a little taste of what that's like with those scenes interspersed with the riding lessons. The ending came up all too abruptly for my taste, with a neat and too convenient path to their HEA.

This story is told from the POV of Jamie. I really like this character. He is a young actor living in London. If you like hot fast erotic m/m sex, this one will please you from the get go! . Jamie has gotten a choice role in a film and he celebrates with his friend and casual sex partner Finn, but for the first time, Jamie feels like he is missing something in his life and a friend with benefits isn’t going to fill that void.
On the first day of filming, Jamie realizes that lying about being able to ride a horse to land the role, might have been a mistake. Then he sees the set horse handler, Andrej Berger. It was lust at first sight for Jamie and when Ajdrej offers private lessons for Jamie, I think I was just as excited as he was . Meeting someone smexy in the stables at night? I knew where this was going and there was no way I was going to miss it...

Reviewed by Markie: BDSM isn't something that I read often. This story was refreshing in the way that it tells the tale of a 'boy' meeting his master, and learning his love of submitting totally to another man.
I enjoyed the relationship they shared. And even in this brief novella, it was played out with a nice pace, allowing the reader to come away with a sense of fulfillment.
The sex was extremely hot! I was left wanting more. I would definitely read more by this author.
