Well written guide to exploring California's ghost towns. There are over 100 sites covered in this short (128 pgs.) book - some easily accessible, others difficult if not impossible (some on private property requiring permission to enter). A few are still inhabited, most have at least some telltale signs that a town once thrived on site; others have wooden or stone buildings in various stages of arrested decay. Informative, sometimes amusing stories about many of the towns covered, the earliest of which first sprang to life in the 1840's. The book includes gold, silver, borax and timber ghost towns. Even if you are not adventurous enough to personally explore these old sites, just reading this book for the fun of it is worthwhile. Maps are included. The book was originally authored by Mickey Broman in 1979, and revised by Russ Leadabrand in 1985.
