Running for their Lives

From May 5, 1996 to April 27, 1997, Karl Gruber became the 9th man to ever successfully run and complete 52 marathons in 52 weeks. He called his year-long marathoning effort his "Super Run for the Cure", because he ran all 52 marathons to raise money and awareness for leukemia reseach and a cure. Despite not realizing what a gargantuan task lay ahead of him, Gruber quit his 16 year-long job as a disc jockey at WHOK-FM in Lancaster, Ohio, rented out his home he owned in Hide-A-Way Hills, Ohio, and sent his beloved Golden Retreiver, Bo, to live with his parents for the year. Despite numerous obstacles and lack of funds, he persisted in running 26.2 miles once-a-week for a year because he believed with all his heart (and his legs!) that he could and would accomplish this feat. This book, "Running for Their Lives" is a recounting of each and every race he ran, and the ensuing highs and lows, the defeats, the victories, blind faith, and lots of miles of running, driving, and flying! Despite the lack of any official backing from the very organization he was running to help, the Leukemia Society of America, Karl Gruber successfully crossed the finish line of his 52nd marathon in 52 weeks, the Big Sur Marathon in Carmel, California, while having raised thousands of dollars for leukemia research. As you read his recounting of his an every amazingly grueling weeek of running and traveling, you will feel as if you are right there with him for every single mile - through all of the sweat, pain, joy, tears, and ultimate success of his running effort. This book is a real page-turner!
