American society seems intent on abandoning Christianity as a means to mitigate the animosity that much of the world feels toward the West. To dismantle Christianity is to abandon Platonism, which has served as the fountainhead of Western philosophy for 2400 years. If American society is to abandon Christianity, then we need to identify the social functions performed by Christianity and identify clear alternatives.
